Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies at TCNJ

Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies at TCNJ The Women's, Gender & Sexuality Studies major is interdisciplinary. Some courses focus specifically on the roles of women, their contributions, and experiences.
(2)

The courses enable students to understand changing social patterns and the effects of institutions and culture on behavior. Courses explore how gender shapes social roles and identities, as well as the function of race, class, and sexuality in the experience of gender within and across cultures. Other Women's and Gender Studies courses study the impact of women and gender on various cultures at va

rious times, and enable students to understand and evaluate changing social patterns and the effects of institutions and cultural assumptions. From a Women's and Gender Studies perspective, the construct of gender difference is fundamental to the organization of human relations. The more aware one becomes of gender, the more one's view of the world of relationships changes, and the better able one is to make intelligent choices. When a gender lens is added to a traditional one, a broader and deeper understanding of the world appears. The major prepares students for a variety of professional and graduate schools, as well as positions in corporations, government agencies, and service industries.

Thank you to everyone who came to the Día de Los Mu***os celebration on Friday, November 1st. Thank you for contributing your photos and decorations to the ofrenda and making it a special experience for everyone involved. We hope you enjoyed the refreshments and had fun talking about Día de los Mu***os while making paper flowers to add to the ofrenda. It looks beautiful, here are some pictures from the celebration and again thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate, contributed to the ofrenda, helped with set up, and made it a meaningful experience!

On Thursday, October 31st, Dr. Cortes took her WGS 270: Intro to Latine/x Feminisms class to the ofrenda in the Bliss lounge to engage in a project called: Honoring Our Roots: Día de los Mu***os and Building the Archive

The Honoring Our Roots project is a class initiative inspired by Latine feminist perspectives on archives and memory. Throughout the course, students are exploring how traditional archives often exclude marginalized voices—especially from Black, Latine, Indigenous, and Q***r communities. Through this installation, students bring visibility to often-overlooked ideas, individuals, and concepts, questioning whose stories are considered “worthy” of remembering. Each piece sheds light on course themes and includes links to organizations actively working to uplift these voices.

The College of New Jersey was awarded a grant of $500,000 by the Mellon Foundation’s Higher Learning program.

The grant will provide funding for "Undocumented. Black. Citizen.", a three-year, collaborative multidisciplinary project led by our own Dr. Marla Jaksch, that aims to co-create teaching resources about citizenship, belonging, migration, and Blackness centering the experiences of Black undocumented immigrants in and beyond Trenton, New Jersey.
