It’s heartbreaking how many messages we receive daily from people wanting to rehome their dogs—often for reasons that could have been addressed with proper planning, training, or commitment. I understand that life throws curveballs, but so many of the situations we hear about don’t reflect genuine emergencies—they reflect choices.

For those considering giving up their pets, I urge you to take a step back. Shelters, rescues, and pounds are overflowing. Resources are limited, and every time we’re forced to say no, it isn’t because we don’t care—it’s because we’re already stretched to the breaking point.

It’s also frustrating when reactive dogs or those with a bite history are brought up as if we have magic solutions. These cases require specialized help, not a handoff. To abandon or surrender a dog you’ve raised is not a solution; it adds to an already overwhelming problem. Dogs are lifelong commitments, not temporary companions.

We’ve all seen posts blaming shelters or rescues for abandoned or neglected animals, but let’s be clear: we’re not the ones who chose to get a dog we couldn’t handle or commit to. If you took on the responsibility of owning a dog, it’s up to you to honor that commitment. You are the key to your dog’s well-being. No one forced you to bring them into your life. Make it work. Ask for training help, seek advice, but don’t immediately look for the exit.

Yes, there are extreme cases where rehoming is unavoidable. For those, I understand and sympathize. But for the majority, it’s a matter of making sacrifices and adjustments. If you’ve managed to make it work—even in challenging situations, like keeping dogs separated or working through behavioral issues—thank you. You’re part of the solution.

Please don’t threaten us with euthanasia when we tell you we can’t help. It’s cruel, and it doesn’t solve the problem. Instead, let’s work together toward better education, better resources, and more accountability. We’re all in this for the animals, but it takes responsibility and effort from everyone.

We can do better—but it starts with all of us stepping up and doing our part.
