Nice, an M8.88 solar flare has just occured on the Sun! This flare appears to have originated from around AR 3981 which has quickly developed into an X-flare player today. We may see further R1-R2-level events from this complex AR.

It seems like there was no CME associated with this large flare.

Awesome, we now see solar wind speeds exceeding 700-800 km/s due to the influence of a high speed stream of solar wind! This is quite a potent stream of fast wind, but we may only see G1-G2 storming unless there is an extended period of B_z south. Heads up high-latitudes for active auroral displays overhead, and mid-latitudes should be on watch since with these speeds, it doesn't take much to get things cooking!

Well, it's my fourth night here in Venetie, Alaska and the 10th night of the rocket launch window! Despite mostly B_z north for the past several hours, there is diffuse aurora setting up to the north. Here is the feed which we monitor for the launches. These are filtered cams. North is to the bottom. From left-to-right on top: Toolik, Venetie. Bottom: Fairbanks, Gakona. These locations are all in Alaska.

Gorgeous aurora last night right outside our cabin in Venetie, Alaska! Hoping for a repeat soon - we have clear skies!

For the fourth night in a row, I saw the northern lights right from the front steps of our cabin here in Venetie, Alaska. What a sight! The air temp was -38 F.

There’s no running water in the cabin up here, so yes, we have to use the bathroom outside in the outhouse 😂. But I think this view sure makes up for that! What do you think?

The cold weather in Venetie is making me miss “chasing” the aurora during the warm September nights in my backyard.

The last few nights up here have been magical with northern lights!

Seeing the green light of the aurora on the other side of that door. You know what’s on the other side…
