The aurora is out tonight in Fairbanks.

01/03/2022

Just had a really nice burst of aurora at the office!!!
For those who head out to watch the beautiful display, travel carefully and dress very warm, as valley areas are 30 to 40 below, and the hills are seeing wind chills in the 40 to 55 below range!

Sparktacular will happen as scheduled, but our back-to-back winter storms mean things will be a little different. If you decide to venture out, here's what you need to know:

• Plan NOT to park alongside roads on and near campus. Crews have been working hard to remove snow from the roads, but shoulders are likely to have berms. Roads need to be clear for emergency vehicles.
• Parking on campus will also be more limited than usual. Parking lots are being cleared, but there will be snow piles.
• Because of limited parking, car pool if possible and come earlier than normal.
• We'll start closing roads near the fallout zone around 7 p.m. Your best bet will be to be parked well before that.
• Because parking will be more limited than usual, you may not be able to watch from your car. Be prepared to walk to a viewing location.
• Temperatures are forecasted to be around 10 below with wind chills down to 20 below. Make sure you are dressed for cold in case you have to walk.

Prefer to avoid the roads and cold? We'll also be streaming the event live on the UAF Facebook and YouTube channels. The Facebook event is linked below.

Update: As of 3:20PM the high is 86°F. A new daily record. 🔥😎

Original: As of 2:53PM the high so far has been 85°F at the Fairbanks Airport, tying a daily record from all the way back in 1919! 🔥
It would be pretty surprising if we did not warm another 1°F over the next few hours and set a new daily record high.
