Haven’t made much post of my Iditarod journey….. when I was a younger man , I spent a lot of time looking at my dad finishing plaque, sign by state governor at the time jay hammond , for his rookie finish at 81 . From what I remember I dreamt and romanticized about running my own team of dogs at that Burl arch .
Now years later I finally did , but the coolest thing was when I crossed the finish lined , my dad gave me a hug (the few times in my life he has hugged me lol) & after shaking Mark V Nordman & the rest of the officials . That my dad realized I came in the same place as he did during his rookie run….26th place . Which is pretty damn cool . Another found memory of that race was coming into ruby . A place I’ve spent a lot of time as a child at , and having my dad sign me in !
For a bit there I was hard on myself during the second half of the race & after the glamor went away , realizing all the rookie mistakes I had made , knowing my dogs and I could have done better . But now as I’ve had time to dwell on it . I’m pretty proud of that placement and pretty sure no other musher has ever placed the same as their father during their rookie run .
Chomping at the bit for next year run, don’t know how many I’m Iditarod I’m going to run in this life but going to go at it with looking forward to tackling as many as possible.
