Today we officially come to the end of Alaska's Aurora Season. AND, before anyone shouts they occur year round, yes, they do occur over 300 days of the year - it just needs to be dark to see them. Based on where we are we feel the nights are just too short and too light after today to really appreciate the beauty of the lights. We will begin taking reservations for the 2024 - 2025 Aurora Season on May 1. Photo was taken in Wiseman mid March by Nicholas Warner.

Happy Spring! Yes, for 2024 (leap year) it falls on Tuesday, March 19 (technically 11:06 EDT) Spring Equinox marks the beginning of spring. The sun will appears to be directly over the equator, and day and night are roughly equal in length. But, it won't last long in Alaska's Arctic since we are gaining 5 - 7 minutes of daylight a day. Soon we will have 24 hours of daylight -- HERE COMES THE SUN!!!! (this is what March looks like in Coldfoot - long days to enjoy a snowshoe outing)

National Day of Unplugging -- we do this EVERYDAY! (Well, we are forced to since we don't have much cell coverage in Alaska's Arctic) But, don't just unplug today, take an Arctic Circle or Arctic Ocean Adventure this summer and reconnect with yourself and your family. (I know, the one picture is being taken with a cell phone -- but they had no connection).

Today is National Elizabeth Peratrovich Day. While this day has been significant in Alaska for many years, it was established nationally last year, 2023, as a day to remember and recognition the work of Elizabeth Wanamaker Peratrovich and other civil rights leaders. It was on this day in 1945 the Alaska Territorial Legislature passed the Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945. The first anti-discrimination law enacted in the history of the United States. Elizabeth dedicated her life to create a better Alaska for future generations. Thank you Elizabeth.

Olympics -- ARCTIC STYLE!!!! If you are going to be in Alaska March 10 - 16, 2024 you may want to consider taking in part of the Arctic Winter Games. OR, if you take volunteer vacations this may be your ticket to experience Alaska -- they are actively recruiting volunteers! Back when it was in Fairbanks I volunteered as an airport greeter and at the indoor soccer games -- SO FUN to see the enthusiasm and energy the youth have in not only their own event but the support they gave to each other to excel!

Mat-Su Valley is excited to host the 2024 Arctic Winter Games March 10-16, 2024. The Arctic Winter Games brings together approximately 2,000 young athletes from around the circumpolar world for a week of athletic competitions and cultural exchanges. Sports competitions will be taking place around the Palmer and Wasilla areas in virtually every venue possible. In addition to the athletes, more than 4,000 volunteers, media and spectators are expected to attend.
Athletes come from Alaska, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Nunavut, Greenland, Nunavik, Northern Alberta and the Indigenous people of Norway, Sweden and Finland. The Games are held every two years, and 2024 is the first time they will be held in the Mat-Su Valley. The 2022 Arctic Winter Games were pushed to 2023 due to Covid, and were held in Wood-Buffalo, Alberta, Canada.
The Games feature 21 sports, ranging from badminton and table tennis to team sports like basketball and ice hockey. Winter sports include snowboarding, skiing, and biathlon among others. Dene games are traditional Arctic games such as stick pull, snow snake, hand games, finger pull and pole push. !

Here is the temperature that is being reported at the Yukon River Camp. Who is up for a winter adventure?

We wonder how much colder the temperature reaches when it surpasses our instrument’s ability to measure it.
Who knows how much colder it will get! Any bets?
Life is better below zero. Stay mighty, everyone!

Due to these high winds we did turn around yesterday for the safety of our guests and guide. This did cause for some guests to not make it to the Arctic Circle and others to have an unplanned overnight in Coldfoot. In a situation like this we ask for patience as we create plans; however, until the weather changes, we can't put any of our plans into place. This is not an everyday occurrence, but it is important to know weather can affect your travel plans and we will do all we can to keep you safe. Unfortunately, even if it means turning around or keeping our planes on the ground until the weather changes. Best wishes for a safe new year.

Going to be breezy the next couple days. 55+ MPH gusts expected for the North Slope, 40+ MPH along the west coast, and 50+ MPH along Interior Summits. Expect difficult travel conditions with blowing and drifting snow.
