Fairfield University Campus Ministry

Fairfield University Campus Ministry Campus Ministry at Fairfield University is a welcoming community that respects each person's spiritu Campus Ministry offers a wide variety of popular programs.

The Pedro Arrupe, S.J., Campus Ministry Center, located on the lower level of the Egan Chapel of St. Ignatius Loyola, strives to be a home for students of all faith traditions who are interested in exploring and enriching their spiritual lives. Rooted in the Catholic faith and steeped in the Ignatian tradition, Campus Ministry is committed to the development of the whole person and believes that a

healthy spiritual life is an essential and key element of the Fairfield University experience. We welcome students from all faith traditions and at all points on their spiritual journey. We offer many different ways to explore what it means to be a person of faith in today's world and to live a "faith that does justice." Retreats, immersion/pilgrimage experiences, service trips, social justice groups, liturgies, and gatherings for prayer and reflection are open to students of all faiths. We also offer opportunities for one-on-one conversation, pastoral counseling, and spiritual direction. Image: ChapelIn support of a vibrant liturgical life on campus, there are many opportunities to participate in musical, Eucharistic, and Lector liturgical ministries with the daily and weekend Masses and groups such as the Lord's Chords and the EM and Lector Communities. There are also several social justice advocacy programs, such as the Students for Social Justice and Students for Life, providing opportunities for partnering works and faith. In an effort to attend to the spiritual needs of our non-Catholic students, Campus Ministry provides a host of services and collaborates with those beyond the Catholic and Jesuit tradition. Campus Ministry co-sponsors monthly Shabbat services and dinners. A Muslim Chaplain-Intern is also available to provide support to our Muslim students. A campus minister affiliated with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship is also available to meet the needs of some of our Protestant students. The Orthodox Christian Fellowship maintains a vibrant presence on campus. Campus Ministry also makes every effort to enable non-Catholic students to connect with local faith communities from their tradition by providing transportation to and from local churches, synagogues, and mosques. Campus Ministry invites all students to come learn, grow, laugh, and pray as they explore their relationship with themselves, God, and their community. We, the staff of Campus Ministry, hope that our students' hearts are set on fire for love and justice as they hear the call of God in their lives. We look forward to meeting you!

We begin Black History Month today with Sr. Thea Bowman! Born Dec. 29, 1937, in Yazoo City, Mississippi, Thea was reared as a Protestant until at age nine when she asked her parents if she could become a Catholic. Gifted with a brilliant mind, beautiful voice and a dynamic personality, Sister Thea shared the message of God’s love through a teaching career. After 16 years of teaching, at the elementary, secondary and university level, the bishop of Jackson, Mississippi, invited her to become the consultant for intercultural awareness. In her role as consultant Sister Thea, an African American, gave presentations across the country; lively gatherings that combined singing, gospel preaching, prayer and storytelling. Her programs were directed to break down racial and cultural barriers. She encouraged people to communicate with one another so that they could understand other cultures and races.

In 1984, Sr. Thea was diagnosed with breast cancer. She prayed “to live until I die.” Her prayer was answered, and Thea continued her gatherings seated in a wheelchair. In 1989, the U.S. bishops invited her to be a key speaker at their conference on Black Catholics. At the end of the meeting, at Thea’s invitation, the bishops stood and sang “We Shall Overcome” with gusto. Thea lived a full life. She fought evil, especially prejudice, suspicion, hatred and things that drive people apart. She fought for God and God’s people until her death in 1990.

This program will explore the impact of living only 15 miles from the U.S./Mexico Border and the challenges faced by families, local farmers, businesses, and the large Chicano community. Participate in community driven initiatives and live the realities by combating the stereotypes immigration has been given right here in one of the most important areas involving this issue. Meet the Amigos Car Club, a grassroots organization that has curbed gang-violence in urban areas, bring water to immigrants crossing the border with the founder of Border Angels, Enrique Morones and travel from Otay to the Pacific Ocean to join the border patrol on a tour between the fence and the wall, highlighting the extreme differences between life on two sides of a wall.
