It’s ! Did you know the story of the Underground Railroad is intimately tied to New York's canals? Many Freedom Seekers used the Erie, Champlain, Oswego, and Cayuga-Seneca Canals as routes for escaping from slavery. For some, the canals became pathways to freedom in Canada. Others settled in canal towns across Upstate New York. Throughout the Corridor you can visit sites to learn about the stories of Freedom Seekers who traveled along the canals escaping slavery in the 1800s.

Many of these sites will be featured in a current initiative to establish the Harriet Tubman Scenic Byway. Led by Underground Railroad Consortium of New York State (URCNYS), the Harriet Tubman Scenic Byway will highlight dozens of historical sites with connections to the Underground Railroad, stretching from New York City to the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center, the former site of the historic Suspension Bridge Village where Harriet Tubman crossed into Canada.

We are VERY excited that the replica Seneca Chief will be in Fairport September 28-30!

This bicentennial year will be an amazing year for the Erie Canal, NY State, canal communities & businesses on/near the canal including Colonial Belle. Our pre-season bookings are already VERY busy!

Happy Birthday to Colonial Belle Crew Member, Maddee today! 🎉

Maddee has been a passenger aboard CB since she was a baby, then she began helping out aboard sometimes as a Junior Crew Member, 2 seasons ago she became a more regular Crew Member able to handle lines/ropes & last season she became able to serve all of the drinks we have available on board too.

She’s the Granddaughter of our company’s founder, Captain Lee & the Daughter of Captain Tammee.

We along with NYS Canal Corporation are excited to announce that 45 non-profit organizations and municipalities will receive 2025 NYS Canal System Tourism Infrastructure and Event Grants totaling $255,000. The grants will support eleven tourism infrastructure and amenity improvements and 36 events along canal waterways and the Canalway Trail.

Events ranging from large festivals to community celebrations and tours promise to contribute to a lively calendar of bicentennial commemorations. Infrastructure and amenity grants will also fund public park improvements, kayak rental kiosks, educational exhibits, and signage that will enhance the visitor experience for years to come.
