We’re doing a Kaimana (West Papua Indonesia “Triton Bay”) through to South Raja Ampat itinerary (including Misool with their black-tip shark nursery) to Sorong. I’m planning on adding some nights either pre/post to adjust to travel & time changes. Triton Bay offers macro, stunning reefs with amazing corals and huge schools of fish along with an area where whale sharks may be encountered. There’s a fishing bagan there where they may be seen feeding on bait fish being collected by the local fishermen.

Southern Raja Ampat (after we leave the Triton Bay Area) offers great manta sites, the biggest sea fans & soft corals I’ve ever seen, and huge schools of fish (big & small) plus amazing macro! The boat has cabins for 14 divers w/4 dive guides to give very personalized service. Nitrox is included.

There are 6 deluxe cabins suitable for couples or shared singles. There is also a gorgeous master cabin with a surcharge (and a private dive guide!). Rate is $6685/pp plus Harbor fees, park fees, and fuel surcharge which are payable onboard the boat. International airfare, domestic airfare, pre and/or post stays, mandatory trip insurance & dive evacuation insurance as well as crew gratuities are additional.

A $2,000 per person non-refundable** deposit will be required to confirm spaces. An additional interim deposit will be required in late August 2024 with final payment due mid-November 2024.

Dates for this trip are January 9-20, 2023 and we will depart and return from Labuan Bajo on the island of Flores, the closest harbor to Komodo and with easy air connections from Bali. Damai I hosts 14 guests and almost as many crew. Crinoid shrimp are masters of camouflage and a challenge to photograph. Porcelain crabs are so darn cute hiding in the soft corals. I once found a very large pink coral that had more than 20 porcelain crabs hiding amongst all the branches!

“The Turks and Caicos Islands is relaxing restrictions to its Public and Environmental Health Arriving Passengers Travel Clearance Regulations for vaccinated travelers to the destination. While all travelers over the age of 18 must still show proof of full vaccination to visit the Turks and Caicos Islands, they are no longer required to provide a negative COVID-19 test or proof of travel insurance to gain entry as of May 1, 2022. All visitors will also no longer be required to upload their information to the TCI Assured portal, as it was discontinued on Saturday, April 30, 2022, and masks will no longer be required in indoors and enclosed spaces.”

All you’ve wanted to know about Pygmy seahorses!

Welcome to the next edition of Marine Life Monday! This week we are taking a closer look at the Bargibanti species of Pygmy Seahorse (Hippocampus bargibanti).

Here are 5 facts that you might not know about these tiny critters:

1. Bargibant’s pygmy seahorses live between 52.5 to 131 feet (16-40 m) deep.

2. Bargibant’s pygmy seahorses grow to a maximum length 0.94 inches (2.4 cm).

3. Bargibant’s pygmy seahorses take the color of whichever species of gorgonian corals they live on.

4. Unlike other seahorses, male pygmy seahorses use a pouch in their trunk – not their tail – to brood their young.

5. The Bargibant’s pygmy seahorse was discovered accidentally in 1969 on a gorgonian coral being examined for science!

A very good friend, another dive travel wholesaler that I’ve worked with for years, has a few spaces on two May charters aboard Damai I doing Raja Ampat out of Sorong. Indonesia is now wide open with proof of full vaccination status, pre-arrival Covid test, Visa on Arrival now back in place, and proof of medical insurance coverage to meet their posted requirements. First charter departs Sorong on May 18 for 11 nights and second charter departs Sorong on May 31, 2022, also for 11 nights. Visa on Arrival is now available in Manado! For our international guests, there is no longer a requirement to obtain a visa in advance.

Guests can fly direct from Singapore to Manado with Scoot Air and obtain a visa on arrival (VOA) in Manado airport.

VOA is IDR 500,000 and valid for 30 days, there is also the possibility to extend the visa for a further 30 days within Indonesia for guests who plan to stay longer in the country!

Woohoo! Great news from Fiji!

“From 7 April, travelling to Fiji will be as easy as showing proof of vaccination, a negative pre-departure rapid test, travel insurance, and a rapid test within 24 hours of arrival.

The requirement to have proof of a three day stay at an approved accommodation in Fiji will be removed for visitors entering the country after April 7.”
