Glimpse into the process of manufacturing a brand new boiler for our #7, Sonora Shay.

1. The completed firebox.
2. The barrel coming together.
3. Then they attach the firebox to barrel and it starts to look like a locomotive boiler.
4. Next comes sheets and tubes, then special fit ups and she’s ready to head to Roaring Camp!
5. January 27th at 8pm she’s finally home!
6. Back home and next to #1 and #2 in our engine house.

Now it’s time for the Roaring Camp team to start reassembling the rest. Stay tuned! Special thanks to Redman Equipment & Manufacturing in Torrance CA for manufacturing the boiler and to Auto Care, a SC County business for expertly handling all the trucking and crane work.

The #7, Sonora Shay has just received a brand new boiler. The boiler was manufactured by Redman Equipment & Manufacturing in Torrance CA. The process took approximately 1 year from initial discussion to delivery.
Here is a photo of the early stages as they work on the backhead. Like using a pattern when sewing, the metal is the fabric and the weld is the thread. More photos of the process will be shared soon!

“Walking through a coast redwood forest in the Santa Cruz mountains, redwoods can often be seen growing in fairy rings. Resilient redwoods can sprout new trees from their branches, trunk, and, like the fungi, from their roots.
Coast redwoods grow far more successfully from sprouts that emerge from roots which are able to take advantage of the parent tree’s existing root system.
Over time, the parent tree’s trunk at the center of the ring will break down and return to the soil further nourishing its next generation and leaving a lovely ring of redwoods.”

Fall is a stunning time to ride the Redwood Forest Steam Train. Trains run rain or shine (unless there is severe weather). In the event of rain, train cars will be covered, but be sure to bring a warm jacket because it can get chilly in the redwood forest.

"Took the redwood Forest steam train with our Nala girl. Choo-choo

In the 1880s, narrow-gauge steam locomotives were used to haul giant redwood logs out of the mountains. Roaring Camp’s steam engines date from 1890 and are among the oldest and most authentically preserved narrow-gauge steam engines providing regularly scheduled passenger service in America."

Roaring Camp Railroads

The dream of preserving a piece of the 1880s and early California was the dream of Roaring Camps Founder F. Norman Clark. Tragically in December 1985, Norman Clark passed away of pneumonia resulting from his selfless work to open the Santa Cruz, Big Trees & Pacific Railway. His wife, Georgiana, the longtime Vice President of Operations was elected chief executive officer by the respective board and continues as President of the company.

Today, Melani Clark, daughter of Roaring Camp Founder, F. Norman Clark and Georgiana serves the company as its CEO continuing to preserve a piece of the 1880's and early California that was the dream of Founder, F. Norman Clark.
