Sea Turtle Nesting Season May 1st - Oct 31st!

May 1st is when the sea turtle nesting season begins and runs through October 31st. 90% of all sea turtle nesting in the United States is in Florida and Amelia Island is an important part of their annual nesting.

Please keep a few things in mind during this time of year.

Lights: Minimize use of flashlights on the beach. Local homeowners should already be using shielded lights and closing blinds/drapes at night.

Beach use: remove all items used during the day, knock down the sand castle and fill-in any holes that day.

Trash: Raccoons, coyotes, and foxes will eat the turtles eggs. Make sure to keep beach areas clean and free of trash so that unwanted animals are not found in or around the beach areas.

Don’t interfere with the nesting/hatching process.

If you see an unmarked nest on the beach, make sure to contact Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch (904) 583-1813.

Driftwood:

Quite simply, this is wood that drifts along the water for long periods of time until it eventually winds up on the beach. Some people buy this wood for art or aquariums due to its stunning beauty and sea washed designs. Here is some of that driftwood at Boneyard Beach on Big Talbot Island.
