Who doesn’t want to love on 70 dogs!?! It is too warm for the Pierson family to do a safari with the dogs, so instead, the Alaskan Huskies got to run free and play with them! There are different sleighs depending on how long the race is. It is amazing how much they eat…over 8,000 calories each when working! That 1 day old puppy stole everyone’s heart!

Part two of Finland’s Lapland area was a smoke Sauna (the wood is burned…supposed to be extra beneficial) on a lake that was under ice three weeks ago and had a wood fired hot tub. The Piersons spent two hours enjoying all these unique experiences. They also have former military vehicles like duck boats that can go on land/ice/water. So fun!

Day 2 & 3 of Vermejo!!

We have become fully immersed in educational adventures! Ted Turner Reserves motto is to Save Everything and learning from all of the wonderful staff here and their passion for sustainability you truly see that in every action.

We discovered the fascinating world of bison 🦬, including their impressive jumping and running abilities, (did you know they can jump up to 9ft and run up to 45mph?!), and learned about the reserve's laudable conservation and sustainability initiatives at Vermejo with their efforts to reduce their footprint and putting to use reduce, reuse, recycle. ♻️

In terms of sustainability it is in every facet and action they take to minimize impact from their gift shop using recycled materials, organic cotton, buying locally, U.S. made products, to glass breakers, finding and fixing leaks in pipe systems, sourcing and growing locally they truly are being mindful in every facet and step of the process in everything they do.

Some of their conservation efforts is to bring back natural stream patterns from deep cutting, growing back local vegetation due to cattle overgrazing in their history, bringing back beavers to their waters, and cutthroat trout all in partnership with the New Mexico Fish and Wildlife.

We also visited the greenhouse, where we gained valuable insights into the food grown onsite(upwards of 800lbs!) and met with Chef Christian who provided an enlightening perspective on the back of house F&B operations.

In addition, we explored the historic Turner House and Casa Grande, gaining a deeper understanding of the reserve's rich history and the efforts to preserve it. We also explored the behind the scenes of the employees headquarters and housekeeping operations.

To top it off, we enjoyed some thrilling outdoor activities like kayaking, hiking, fishing, archery, and rock climbing!😊

Today, our students enjoyed another amazing meal & such cool experiences! Their conservation tour this morning learning about the beaver dams & the conservation effort between & the New Mexico fish & wildlife to bring back beavers & natural plants back from overgrazing due to cattle in the past & the natural water system. They saw bison & a fossil they saw was a shrimp fossil burrows in that area it used to be completely underwater. Sustainability tour was also explaining to us how their recycling system works. Finally, Explaining to us in the sustainability tour how their glass breaker works. Describing how glass is made of silica and silica is also in dirt this glass recycler helps break down the glass to be reused on site whether it be decor or even helping fill in areas with a mix of dirt and glass that is no longer sharp and broken down into almost sandlike texture.
