Serena Williams announces she will retire from tennis after U.S. Open.

Williams brought her own distinctive flair to tennis, challenging norms that governed fashion, power, decorum, race and gender. By being herself, Williams’s reach far exceeded the game.

The 2022 Nassau County Mixed Doubles Championships we’re held this past weekend at Amelia National Tennis Club.
The event was sponsored by First Coast Mortgage Lending, First Love Brewing and ANTC. Players weathered the warm temperatures and displayed stiff competition in all divisions. Winners of the 8.0 division were Lynn Kunkle and Keven Fitzgerald defeating Diana Tarzia and David Weihe in the final round 6-4, 6-3. Jane Partridge and Frank Schwartz defeated Nick and Kim Gillette in the finals of the 7.0 Division 6-3, 6-1. In the 6.0 division John and Denise Kublbock came in first place with Frances Blancett and Robert Duffy taking second place.

Congratulations Vishnu!

ANTC’s very own “Coach Vishnu “ won the 70s division of the National Longboat Key Clay Courts championships last week. He completed the 6 match winning streak yesterday by defeating Tom Jaklitsch in a hard fought final round. Vishnu cruised through the 64 draw winning 12 sets in a row…he defeated seeded players along the way and did not drop a single set. Awesome job Vishnu ..we’re all so proud of you!

Serena and I hold the record for first (and all!) 14 grand slam finals won. I didn’t even realize this until right before our 14th final at Wimbledon and a reporter mentioned that we had never lost a grand slam final. I don’t know how one doesn’t realize this lol, but that was the case. I remember my response was “ok, no pressure! Lol!” These photos are from our first Grand Slam title at the French open in 1999. I remember in the match we were up a set and 5-3 when hubris got the best of me. I got overconfident and didn’t focus on winning each and every point. I figured the title was ours. That could not have been further from the truth. The score became even and then I remember being the exact opposite of confident and getting so tight I couldn’t perform until late in the third set. It was all very dramatical. There were so many rain delays and the wind started to blow the clay around in waves across the court. The final had gone from straightforward to a downright saga. In the end we won the first of 14 Grand Slams, but I learned a powerful lesson. Never let up! This photo of us lifting the trophy shows the final triumph but doesn’t tell the story and the battle that occurred to get there. The journey is the best part! ❤️❤️

WHAT'S THE CALL:
BLOWIN' IN THE WIND

Question: On a very windy day, my opponent hit a ball that bounced on my side of the court and then went back over the net without me hitting it. I thought it was my point because the ball ended up on my opponent’s side. Who wins the point?

Answer: Depending on how it is blowing, wind could be your best friend or worst enemy in a match. The wind is not, however, your invisible doubles partner who can help return a ball on your behalf. Once your opponent’s ball bounced on your side of the court, you must use your racquet to make contact with the ball. Even if the wind blows the ball back into your opponent’s court, you can hit the ball as long as you don’t touch the net.
