Learn the stories of Amelia Island and the eight flags that have flown over its historically rich land. With its similarities in shape and size to Manhattan, the island spans 13 miles long and 3 miles wide. Known as the ‘Isle of Eight Flags’, Amelia Island has been claimed under eight different authorities since the first flag being flown over 450 years ago, while Native Americans called it home for over a thousand years prior to that. These eight flags tell stories of bloody massacres between the early settlers, tales of fraud and deception to possess and occupy the land, as well as love and comradery between the long-time residents, and those seeking to call the new world home. Amelia Island was a keystone for the largest monetary fraud in history, with a very colorful character of a man running the scheme. These stories are full of irony, deceit, tall tales, and the ambition of one man who set his sights on connecting Florida from east to west by railroad, while also making political history. Although being divided from America on multiple occasions, at times under very unpleasant circumstances, the island still prospers today. It’s the birth place of the modern sh*****ng industry and continues to draw in people to share in her beauty of the past and present. The story of Amelia Island will unfold before you with interesting facts, unusual tales, and the incredible history it shares along with the nearby barrier islands.
