This was too funny not to share! 😆 We love our manatees here in Florida and do what we can to protect them. Honestly, I think they're cute! 🥰

Explorer Christopher Columbus, sailing near the Dominican Republic, believes he spots three “mermaids." In reality they were manatees.

As it has been almost a year to the day that the war of 1812 was declared by President James Madison, Great Britain defeated the European reign of Napoleon Bonaparte in Waterloo. Having declared war on France in 1803, Britain had been fighting for over a decade. When the United States declared war against them, they did not have the manpower to effectively fight. As we previously discussed, they were bribing Native Americans to fight in their places. Although they were victorious against the fight against Napoleon and his empire, this kept the British from possibly regaining possession of the United States. Had Great Britain not waged war against Napoleon, or had it taken place during a different time period, where would our country be now? What nation would possess Amelia Island if not the United States? History is so cool! Book a tour with us and find out so much more!

Continuing our discussion on the War of 1812, we mentioned the many ways Great Britain was threatening our land that left President James Madison no choice but to wage war. They had been capturing American sailors out at sea, attacking U.S. soil, and aiding the Native Americans to attack. England was busing fighting Napoleon in Europe and didn't have many soldiers to spare. British Major General Isaac Brock promised restoration of land to Shawnee war chief, Tecumseh, leader of a Native confederation, who opposed American expansion beyond the Ohio River. Tecumseh and his brother, Tenskwatawa, sided with Britain to form a pan-Indian alliance to resist the United States. After months of push back from the opposition, Tecumseh's loss brought an end to the coalition, which secured the land for the United States. There is so much more to these battles that produced the land we know today. Amelia Island Historic Tours encourages you to research and study our country's history. Take a tour with us and learn so much more!

On this day in 1812, the United States declared war against Great Britain. James Madison was the first president to ask Congress to declare war. His grievances against Britain involved interference with sea trade, inciting attacks with the natives on the frontier, but most of all, the continuation of violating the American Flag and those protected under it. Great Britain seized American citizens and ships on the high seas to gain territorial control, causing much bloodshed. Book a tour with Amelia Island Historic Tours and ask your guide what effect this war had on Amelia Island.

Amelia Island Historic Tours

Learn the stories of Amelia Island and the eight flags that have flown over its historically rich land. With its similarities in shape and size to Manhattan, the island spans 13 miles long and 3 miles wide. Known as the ‘Isle of Eight Flags’, Amelia Island has been claimed under eight different authorities since the first flag being flown over 450 years ago, while Native Americans called it home for over a thousand years prior to that. These eight flags tell stories of bloody massacres between the early settlers, tales of fraud and deception to possess and occupy the land, as well as love and comradery between the long-time residents, and those seeking to call the new world home. Amelia Island was a keystone for the largest monetary fraud in history, with a very colorful character of a man running the scheme. These stories are full of irony, deceit, tall tales, and the ambition of one man who set his sights on connecting Florida from east to west by railroad, while also making political history. Although being divided from America on multiple occasions, at times under very unpleasant circumstances, the island still prospers today. It’s the birth place of the modern sh*****ng industry and continues to draw in people to share in her beauty of the past and present. The story of Amelia Island will unfold before you with interesting facts, unusual tales, and the incredible history it shares along with the nearby barrier islands.
