It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Shirley O'Brien, our very first one-on-one student at Awakening Minds Art, on August 20, 2024.
Shirley was not just a student; she was a cherished member of our family who helped lay the foundation for everything we do today. Fun, silly, and ornery, Shirley taught us the true meaning of love and kindness through her time with us.
Her impact on our organization is profound, and her legacy lives on in every brushstroke, every smile, and every success story that comes out of our programs.
Shirley's family, deeply appreciative of the joy and growth AMA brought to her life, has kindly requested donations be made to Awakening Minds Art in her honor, in lieu of flowers. This gesture is a testament to how much this organization meant to Shirley and her loved ones.
"Though many of our current members may not have had the chance to meet Shirley, it's important that we all recognize and honor her as a cornerstone of what Awakening Minds Art stands for today. A huge thank you to the University of Findlay and the students and staff participating in this year's Orientation Service Project!! Hundreds of canvases were prepped for the upcoming Fall and Winter seasons, an Art Auction piece is now ready for display, paint was condensed, and other projects completed. What a HUGE help!!

Our programs would not survive without the gracious help from our community, and UF students have set a wonderful example for their classmates, friends, and community. Thank you!!

A support group for individuals affected by brain trauma and strokes contacted AMA in January.

These individuals were looking for knowledge about activities to make them stronger, more capable, more confident, and social.

The visual arts is a fun and challenging activity that can be made achievable for everyone! Making art increases happiness, encourages movement, and practices the verbal and motor goals set forth by occupational, speech, and physical therapists – perfect for those affected by brain injury.

The support group requested a presentation on this information while experiencing the benefits of painting at the same time.

But they couldn’t pay for travel, the presentation, or the painting supplies.

THIS fund allowed Awakening Minds Art to say yes anyway.

And because of that, a group of 16 individuals in-need were introduced to an activity they could achieve together or alone and learned how it could benefit them specifically.

The Free or Heavily Discounted Program Fund is a discretionary fund used to support groups unable to pay full or partial price for programming.
AMA’s participation in free community events, workshops for at-risk populations, and collaborative ventures with other organizations are examples of ways these funds may be used. Funding is determined based on a point scale of key criteria including financial need, mission-focus, at-risk populations served, community impact, and history of, or potential for, partnership opportunities.

We're Hiring

Awakening Minds Art (AMA) seeks an instructor for educational visual arts classes. In particular, we're looking for someone to teach Homeschool Visual Arts classes happening every Wednesday 9am-noon during the school year in Findlay. Opportunities to take on private group painting classes and to grow with the organization are regularly available and encouraged. Training is provided and help with lesson planning is possible. An art education background is preferred. Must have a valid driver's license & reliable transportation Must be able to pass a background check (no criminal background) Must have access to e-mail and a cell phone for communication Once Employed: Pay is per class, and there is plenty of room to grow your class schedule! Must be available on some evenings and weekends

Do you know your tertiary colors? Aiden does! Aiden loves art and has been exercising and expanding his knowledge of it for about 5 years at AMA. During sessions, he focuses on strengthening his hands, conversation skills, and following verbal directions. His receptive and expressive skills have flourished over the years!

Check out that stretch!! Fine motor control, stretching muscles, and pencil grip are just three things Taylor works on with her AMA instructor during One-on-One sessions. Please consider a gift to Awakening MInds Art this year for #GivingTuesday Two years ago, we learned two big lessons. #1. We have a whole bunch of community support, and our programming is IMPORTANT in the lives of our students in our one-on-one therapeutic classes, our nursing homes & agencies, schools, and community classes (this didn't really surprise us, though) #2. Having an emergency reserve is vital for sustaining services during unforeseen circumstances. Here, at the end of 2022, we find ourselves in a confident position, asking ourselves, “what’s the next responsible step forward for the organization?” The AMA Future Fund is a reserve fund to ensure the financial health and continuity of Awakening Minds Art. It is responsible planning for the future. Gifts given up until the New Year will go towards this AMA Future Fund (unless otherwise specified). Our starting goal is $3,000, and we will continue to make new goals annually for building the reserve. This new fund is an important step for the long-term success of Awakening Minds Art.
