Some interesting history for the area:

TONIGHT! Maryland Public Television premieres a new documentary, “Unpacking Cambridge: A Story of Rebirth and Reconciliation,” on Jan. 2 at 9pm. It focuses on The Packing House, once part of the Phillips Packing Company, which went from boom to bust in the first half of the 1900s. After years of sitting empty, the 60,000-square foot building has been transformed. As MPT says, “'Unpacking Cambridge' pulls back the layers of history to reveal the new opportunities and hope that are rising from the ashes of the once-shuttered Packing House.”

WAY BACK MACHINE: A Bridge for Cambridge
This is the old Harrington Bridge, a narrow, two-lane affair that crossed the Choptank River at Cambridge. It opened 87 years ago this week, in 1935. Before that, the only way across the river here was by ferry.

A few tidbits:
• The first boat to cross under the draw at the center of that bridge was the presidential yacht "Sequoia." President Franklin Roosevelt was aboard.
• He came to Cambridge to celebrate the completion of this example of his Depression-era public works projects. A slew of other VIPs stood atop the bridge as the president motored through while everyone celebrated a grand opening.
• The local man who was most responsible for pushing the project to the finish line was U.S. Senator (and Dorchester County native) George Radcliffe.
• Early on, the Harrington Bridge was regarded as an eye-popping marvel of modern engineering. It was the longest bridge by far in all of Maryland, all the way up until the Chesapeake Bay Bridge opened in 1952.
• The Harrington bridge did just fine until traffic increased by leaps and bounds after that Bay Bridge opened. By the 1970s, it had become "the bane of beachgoers," according to the Washington Post. That drawbridge created lots of weekend backups. So did frequent accidents along the narrow roadway.
• After the grand opening, President Roosevelt disembarked briefly at nearby Long Wharf, delivering a few boring remarks. Today, a "smokestack" from one of Roosevelt’s presidential yachts—the "Potomac," not the "Sequoia"—stands on the waterfront at Long Wharf, near the Choptank River Lighthouse.
• That “smokestack” was fake. It actually served as an elevator to help the disabled Roosevelt make his way around the yacht.
• The four-lane Malkus Bridge that you cross over nowadays opened in 1987. The man it's named after, Frederick C. Malkus, was a state senator and local bigwig. In his youth, he earned $13 a week doing construction on the old Harrington Bridge in the 1930s.
• A good bit of the old Harrington Bridge is still there, but there is no draw. It was transformed into popular fishing piers, one on either side of the river.
• Access to it these days is very limited right now, however. There are worries about structural problems. Here's hoping they'll figure those out in an affordable way right quick.

One last thing, from back in 1935. The Baltimore Sun had an entertaining little anecdote about the grand opening. It seems that local Boy Scouts were assigned to traffic-control duties. Scout Tommy Coll was stationed on the Talbot side. His job was to ask all passengers in the VIP autos allowed on the bridge to get out and walk to the draw. For some reason that is not explained, only one person, the driver, was allowed to stay in the car and move up and out onto the bridge.

Here is the key bit in the Sun story: "In one automobile was a short, stout man with gray hair and dark eyes. He followed the Scout's instructions and walked across the bridge. [Later], at the dedication ceremonies, this man placed his hand on the Scout's shoulder and said: "Young chap, are you the fellow who made me walk across the bridge?"
The boy replied: "I am"
"Well, let's shake hands," said the stout man. "I'm the governor of Maryland." His name was Harry Nice, and that good-natured exchange makes him seem very nice indeed!
