Grand Canyon National Park is one of the last few places in the United States where one can experience a star-filled night sky. We are determined to protect the night sky for future generations, keeping Grand Canyon in the dark.

Beginning the 4800 ft. climb from Phantom Ranch to the South Rim - on the S. Kaibab Trail. (1/17/2020)

Winter hikers at Grand Canyon should be prepared for cold temperatures, icy trails, and short daylight hours. NPS backcountry rangers recommend bringing over-the-shoe-traction devices, trekking poles, extra snacks, flashlights/headlamps, and layered clothing that can easily be added or removed to adapt to a variety of weather conditions.

Stop by the Backcountry Information Center prior to your hike for a trail condition update, and pay close attention to the current weather forecast. More tips: https://go.nps.gov/15

Panning to the right, a number of trail switchbacks are visible, climbing up through the red and black walls of metamorphic schist, Grand Canyon's "basement rocks". Continuing to pan right, the river again comes into view, along with the broad river delta where Bright Angel Creek meets the Colorado River. Bright Angel Campground and Phantom Ranch are between 1/2 and 3/4 of a mile up the side canyon above the delta. NPS/M.Quinn

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) — An approaching storm forecast to dump heavy snow in the region has accelerated the seasonal closing of the highway

11/25/2019

Planning to visit this week? We are expecting a major winter storm over the Thanksgiving Holiday. The top part of Grand Canyon trails are already icy! Don't risk it - like these folks.

Slip-on shoe traction & trekking poles are recommended. Bring yours with you, or purchase them at shops within Grand Canyon Village. (South Rim)

Here in the village, slip-on foot traction devices range in price from $20 to $45. They may be purchased at the General Store, Bright Angel Lodge, Grand Canyon Conservancy Stores, and Bright Angel Bicycles.

Trekking poles may be rented from the General Store for $3 per pole, per day. https://www.visitgrandcanyon.com/dining-and-shopping/grand-canyon-outfitters

Grand Canyon Conservancy shops sell individual trekking poles for $20 each. These are not as robust as more expensive poles, but are fine for a holiday visit. https://www.grandcanyon.org/about-us/park-store-locations-and-hours/

ALERT issued Monday, Nov. 25, 2019: A major winter storm will impact the Grand Canyon region late Wednesday through early Saturday. Significant travel disruptions are anticipated through the Thanksgiving holiday.

First snow of the season!

First snow of the season!

I arrived last night in a flurry.

This morning, it's still rather cold here, on the South Rim.
Roads and footpaths are snowpacked and icy in places, so please be careful. The high temperature is expected to reach 41° F (5° C) today, so my visit here may last longer than planned.

We're expecting a sunny, clear, and cold weekend, with highs reaching around 50 ° F, and lows dipping into the teens. If you are planning to visit from California or Southern Arizona, bring some extra warm layers along. You can follow our weather forecast/webcam here: https://go.nps.gov/06

The sidewinder (Crotalus cerastes) is a venomous rattlesnake that is fairly common in the Mojave desert. These small snakes get their name from their unique form of traction. The animals are primarily nocturnal, when they emerge to hunt small lizards and rodents. NOTE: Please don't try and bite any snakes. Observe all wildlife from a safe distance!

It's Scorpion season at Grand Canyon! Grand Canyon is home to all kinds of wildlife, and scorpions form an important part of the ecosystem here. Here we can see a mother scorpion hauling her babies around Phantom Ranch, hunting for food in the dark of night. Thanks to Ranger Brendan Oates for the picture!
