Important Update: Starting today (Jan 08, 2025) visitors from the US, Australia, and Canada (amongst others) will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter the UK (for a full list of countries requires the new ETA and dates from when the new requirements are applicable, please see the following link - https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-an-electronic-travel-authorisation-eta)
This initiative is part of the UK government's effort to fully digitize border control. The ETA will provide both travelers and carriers with more confidence regarding travel eligibility. An online application must be completed, and a small fee will be charged, it is similar to the US ESTA system.
From January 8, 2025, travelers who do not currently require a visa will need an ETA. Notably, EU citizens are exempt from this requirement until April 2nd, 2025.
It is important to clarify that the ETA is not a visa but a visa waiver, which means travelers from countries already needing a visa will still need to apply for one.
The ETA allows travelers to stay in the UK for up to six months for business, tourism, visiting family, or academic purposes. It is also required if the traveler is transiting through the UK to another country.
To apply for an ETA, you will need a valid passport, an email address, travel details, and a debit or credit card for payment. The easiest way to apply, is via the ETA app.
