Visiting Arizona’s high country means embracing stunning landscapes — but it also means staying vigilant when it comes to fire safety. As we enjoy the beauty of our forests, remember that small actions can make a big difference in keeping Flagstaff safe from wildfires.

🔥 Know Your Restrictions: Stay informed about fire restrictions and bans in our area. Check with local authorities and the Coconino National Forest Service for the latest updates.

🔥 Practice Safe Outdoor Activities: Whether you're camping, hiking, or having a barbecue, always use designated fire pits and grills. Never leave fires unattended - it is illegal to abandon a campfire in Flagstaff - ensure they are fully extinguished before leaving.

🔥 Stay on the Trail: Only use designated open forest roads and trails for recreation.

🔥 Smoking is Prohibited in Public Areas: Smoking/use of e-cigarettes is prohibited in the city's public spaces.

🔥 Be Aware of Chains and Parking: Dragging chains or tow straps can spark wildfires. Secure your chains and straps before traveling. Parking over grassy areas can spark wildfires, park in areas clear of grasses and foliage.

🔥 Report Suspicious Activity: If you see something, say something! Report any signs of smoke or suspicious activity to authorities immediately.

🔥 Stay Prepared: Have an emergency evacuation plan in place for your family, and keep important documents and belongings ready to go in case of evacuation.

Most wildfires are caused by human activity. Practicing fire safety isn’t just about protecting yourself — it’s about protecting our entire community and the wild places we love.

Let's all do our part to reduce wildfire risk and ensure Flagstaff remains the beautiful mountain town we call home.

"I think there is a nice anecdote in this when you started Emerson School, all you could speak was old (?) Arabic and Mexican." -Monica Nackard, February 2, 1976. Oral Interview with Susan L. Rodgers, Northern Arizona University, Cline Library.

Welcome back to Flagstaff Then and Now! Today, we will be looking at the Emerson School, Flagstaff's first permanent educational institution.

Built in 1895 on the corner of Aspen Avenue and Sitgreaves Street, the Emerson School was Flagstaff’s first permanent educational institution. Funded by a bond vote in 1893, the school served students from kindergarten through high school, teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic, while also offering instruction in Arabic, Spanish, and English—a reflection of the diverse population it served.

At the time, the school was segregated by language, with English-speaking and Spanish-speaking children taught separately. Due to Jim Crow laws, Black children attended the Dunbar School, a separate institution for African American students, which opened in the early 20th century.

In 1923, the opening of Flagstaff High School relieved the Emerson School of its older students, transitioning it into a strictly elementary school. After decades of shaping young minds, the school eventually closed and stood vacant for a short time before being demolished in 1986.

In its place, the Flagstaff City-Coconino County Public Library opened in May 1987, providing a modern facility to meet the community’s educational and informational needs. The library was constructed over the preserved basement of the Emerson School, ensuring that a part of the building’s history remains to this day.

From its earliest days as a gathering place for students of different languages to its legacy beneath the modern public library, the Emerson School’s story is one of community, connection, and cultural resilience—a foundational chapter in Flagstaff’s rich history of education.

"It's a dry heat" more like "it's a dry FREEZE!" 🥶

As Flagstaff prepares for another round of snow Tuesday evening, here are some pro-tips for safe and responsible snowplay.

❄️ Gear Up: Equip yourself with essential emergency items and the right attire for your snowy travels - snow chains are a must!

❄️ Pack It Out: What comes with you should leave with you! From sleds to snacks, ensure our snowscape remains untouched. Utilize the Winter Recreation Map to find appropriate disposal locations.

In Flagstaff, where the pine trees sway,
Beneath the dark skies, where the stars hold their play,
A Christmas charm fills the crisp, cool air,
With snow-dusted peaks, a sight beyond compare.

The streets are aglow with festive delight,
Neon signs on Route 66 shining so bright.
Downtown whispers of history and cheer,
As the Great Pinecone readies to ring in the year.

Breweries toast with warm winter ales,
While cafés brew cocoa with cinnamon trails.
Every corner, a moment, a memory to hold,
As Flagstaff sparkles in hues of gold.

So come one, come all, to this mountain delight,
Where Christmas shines under the Milky Way’s light.
In Flagstaff we gather, in joy and in peace,
Wishing you love as the holidays increase.

Happy Holidays! 🎄🎅
