Moss skirts the bases of cypress trees in the Okefenokee Swamp. It has survived for hundreds of years in damp, shady places. Moss has advanced vascular systems, is used traditionally for insulation, and has reforestation benefits because of its ability to hold 20 times their weight in liquid absorption.

The Belted kingfisher, Megaceryle alcyon, is one of the very few bird species where the female is more colorful than the male. They make their nest in a dirt tunnel on the banks of rivers. Their tunnels can be 1-8 feet in length.
