Mary Read and Anne Bonney were female pirates during the Golden Age of Piracy, and they were part of the Flying Gang; a group of pirates who made New Providence (Nassau), their home in the Bahamas.
Anne Bonney was raised as a young girl in Charleston. She was Irish with red hair and green eyes. They were both members of "Calico " Jack Rackhams crew. Captain Jack Rackham was known for wearing calico clothing and for his pirate flag, "The Jolly Roger".

I have been conducting many different types of history tours in 20 years plus, and I've learned that history is not always an exact science. I have heard my different versions of historical facts. But I'm always polite and would not debate the history guide sharing his knowledge,.but I have never had people want to debate the facts.
I personally find it rude when someone spends 20 years researching history to be told your wrong. I wouldn't tell a plumber how to do his job because I'm not a plumber .Thanks y'all!

Of course, Folly Beach is also referred to as "Coffin Island ", by the locals, but even back when soldiers were stationed here during the Civil War, they were calling it "Coffin Island ", so it added a bit of mystery to the place. But nowhere on the old maps do they call it, "Coffin Island ", but it was called, "Coffin Land ", and also to add confusion, Morris Island also was referred to on old maps as Coffin Land.
Here's an example of an old map from 1777, in that year the first Lighthouse was completed. They started building it in 1768. So for Charleston's first 107 years of existence we had no formal Lighthouse. No wonder it was considered dangerous getting in and out of the harbor and had to be done during high tide. As a result Folly Island became home to the many who lost their lives in shipwrecks, eventually given a burial on the island by local wreckers looking for anything valuable in the wreckage. Eventually the Charleston jetties were built in the 1890s forever changing the entrance to the Charleston harbor.

On May 22nd 1718, the infamous Blackbeard the pirate started a blockade of the Charleston harbor that lasted for six days. He also threatened to destroy the town. By now he had over 300 sailors and four ships with him including the Gentleman pirate, Stede Bonnet from Barbados. They had decided to sail together and team up. More than likely Blackbeard anchored his ships at Five fathom hole located off the northeastern end of Folly island .
Blackbeard seized nine ships in the harbor and held local citizens hostage. He demanded a chest of medicine for his ailing crew. A captain Marks along with a few of the crew rowed into Charleston to collect the medicine. After five days captain Marks returned with a 400 lb. chest of medicine and apologized to Blackbeard for the delay. He couldn't find some of the pirates who had been busy drinking with friends. The hostages and ships were released. After leaving Charleston, Blackbeard headed to Topsail, NC where he grounded his ship ,"The Queen Annes Revenge " on a sandbar. He disbanded his pirate crew and gave Stede Bonnet, the gentleman pirate his ship back. The infamous Blackbeard disappeared with 23 men along with all the treasure. That would be the last time Stede Bonnet was to see Blackbeard. He was double crossed. By the end of 1718 both pirates would be dead
Inclosed is a copy of Blackbeard and Stede Bonnets flags

William Porcher Miles,
born in Walterboro SC, and who attended the local College of Charleston, is the man responsible for designing the Confederate battle flag. The flag was originally designed for the Confederate Congress as a possible choice for the Confederate national flag, but was rejected because "it looked like a pair of suspenders ".The flag however was adopted by the Confederate army as a battle flag because it looked different from the United States flag. The Confederate national flag, however would change over a four year period. Today the battle flag causes much controversy .

Folly's History Tours is now known as Folly's History Walk. We have a new website at follyshistorywalk.com and we also have a new walk this year.
The new history walk is called "The Coffin Island Ghost Talk", it's an alternative to a ghost walk. Hey!, it's the beach and you're hot and tired from a long day, skip the ghost walk and come join us for the Coffin Island Ghost Talk. We enjoy the end of day, twilight at the Folly pier and enjoy traditional ghost stories told from Charleston, Folly, and other SC sea islands. The Ghost Talk lasts 60-75 minutes, you might bring a folding chair because seating is limited. The Ghost Talk is free to the public. Gratiuties appreciated!
The stories told include Folly's pirate ghost story and a ghost story from 1925, called "The Half Pint Flask ",written by a Folly resident, Dubose Heyward who is known for the novel Porgy, which was made into Porgy and Bess. What a great place to enjoy the end of day and hear some entertaining stories. Great for those with limited mobility. Just a short walk to the end of the pier.
