What an INCREDIBLE shot! 🌪📸

The first sea turtle nests of the season are hatching along our area beaches. In the past few days, we've had baby loggerhead sea turtles along beaches on both Hunting Island and Hilton Head. It's a wonderful time of the year in .🐢💚🐢

At the end of June we have a total of 61 nests. At the end of June in 2021 there a total of 52 nests. July will likely be a very busy month for us.

On May 25, around 6pm, Edisto Beach State Park staff were notified that there was a loggerhead sea turtle that had recently came ashore to nest. Leah, the sea turtle specialist, and the summer sea turtle interns, headed down the beach to ensure the turtle was able to nest without disturbance but our beachgoers already knew what to do! Everyone stayed back and let her do her thing!

Leah captured photos after the sea turtle successfully nested, leaving behind nest #52. It is always exciting to see a turtle during daylight hours, as they typically nest at night. If you do see a sea turtle, be sure to keep still and a distance of at least 20ft. This will ensure she is able to continue to nest. Edisto Beach State Park is now at 54 nests! Go turtles go! 🐢

The first month of our 2022 season is in the books. In May we had a total of 18 nests. In 2021 we had 10 nests in May and in 2020 we had 9 nests in May. So we’re off to a promising start, but nowhere near the record setting pace of 2019.

The Morris Island Lighthouse will be lit two nights this weekend!
First, for testing of upgrades, on Saturday May 28th and, more importantly, in observance of Memorial Day on Monday May 30th.
Lightings are from 7:30 PM to 11:00 PM each evening.
