Fog days rain true this year. It is supposed to be 90 days after winter fog we get a rainy spell. We certainly have a rainy spell right now, so I looked back 3 months and sure enough, there is fog written on my calander!

I was hoping to have the cows grazing alfalfa for the field day. I didn't get the timing right to make it work. So here is video proof that they do actually graze the alfalfa.

Yesterday my Dad and I chopped rye. Makes for good cattle feed, even if the yield wasn't tremendous.

Cleaned some oats yesterday. Really fun to make this old stuff work.

The History of Clover Lane Farm

Clover Lane Farm is a small livestock and grain farm in Pocahontas County, Iowa. We (Neil and Elizabeth Peterson) are the fifth generation of Petersons to farm the land. Neil’s great great grandparents, Alexander and Sophia Peterson, came to Colfax Township of Pocahontas County in 1881. Alexander purchased our current farm in 1899 for his son, Melvin. Melvin and his wife Edna farmed and raised their family here. Their son, Maynard, and his wife, Izetta, continued farming the land along with milking cows and raising cattle and hogs. Next in line came Neil’s parents, Ron and Corinne Peterson. Ron had dairy cows and then switched to beef cows after his children went to college. We moved to the farm in the Spring of 2018 having worked in rural community development work in South East Asia for over 10 years.

We are excited to steward the family farm. Small farms like ours face many challenges as we fight against the tsunami of scale in modern agriculture. Buying directly from small farms like ours is one way that you can help to keep small farms viable.
