HAVE YOU EVER CRUISED THE “TAIL OF THE DRAGON?”
For those of you who don’t know, it is also known as Deals Gap.
My fellow Miata buffs and motorcyclists consider it one of the best drives or rides around.
It is a stretch of US 129 at the Tennessee/North Carolina state line — and runs only about eleven miles or so.
What makes it so special?
It is remote and boasts more than three hundred curves.
So yes ... it can be tricky and dangerous.
Now the Tennessee Highway Safety Office is joining forces with the NC Governor's Highway Safety Program.
They are launching “Border to Border,” — a joint campaign to reduce traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities along the high-risk area called "Tail of the Dragon.”
So, if you are out to tame the beast ... go for it.
But be safe.
Troopers will be there as well.
ANYONE OUT THERE EVER TACKLE THE TAIL OF THE DRAGON?

Due to bear activity, Cosby K**b Shelter (mile 231.1) in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is closed until further notice. Three bear incidents have also been reported recently in North Carolina around the Groundhog Creek Shelter (mile 248.7).

Black bears (and their cubs) are becoming increasingly active along the . To protect wildlife from becoming habituated to acquiring food from campsites and shelter areas, visitors should take care to store their food properly.

For tips on staying safe from bears and storing food properly, as well as directions on how to report a bear encounter on the , visit www.appalachiantrail.org/bears.

Get ready for spectacular views - Clingmans Dome opens for the season on April 1! At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This is a great location for sunrise and sunset photography. A 0.5 mile trail leads to the summit. The trail is paved but steep, and leads to an observation tower on top. Things to keep in mind: Clouds, precipitation, and cold temperatures are common at Clingmans Dome. Temperatures at the dome can be 10 -20 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than in the surrounding lowlands.

Road 15 of 21 is the road that goes well, nowhere . . .

The creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the 1920s and 1930s resulted in many homesteaders being evicted from their lands. The construction of Fontana Dam (1942-44) created Fontana Lake which flooded the existing roadway NC288 and many of the small ghost towns along the route. What remained on the north side of the new lake in the National Park were cemeteries and ruins of homesteads, logging operations and mining towns.

The Federal Government promised those who had been displaced that a new road would be constructed along the northern shoreline to allow access to the newly isolated cemeteries where their loved ones rested. A thirty mile road known as Lakeview Drive would link Bryson City and Fontana. Construction began, but with just 6 miles and a tunnel competed work was halted because of environmental concerns. These issues were resolved, but road work never resumed. The Lakeview Drive became known as the Road to Nowhere by disgruntled citizens.

After decades of legal wrangling, the United States Department of the Interior settled by agreeing to pay Swain County fifty-two million dollars for the broken promise. This completely left out neighboring Graham County who also had an interest in seeing the road completed. Today the only access to the cemeteries is by trail, a long and rugged hike or by boat crossing Fontana Lake.

Today the Road to Nowhere has become popular with hikers, fly fishermen, horseback riders and the motoring tourist. Trail access to the Noland Creek Trail and Lakeshore Trail can be found along the Road to Nowhere. And, Noland Creek is a picture perfect Smoky Mountains trout stream.

And a movie was even filmed in the area. Alien Abduction, a 2014 sci-fi based on the real life Brown Mountain Lights of North Carolina, had several scenes along the road and in the tunnel.
The six miles of the Road to Nowhere is an interesting motoring adventure with some scenic views of Fontana Lake, several hiking trails in addition to the 30 mile Northshore Trail and a scary walk through the “alien abduction” tunnel.
