The amount of deaths last year in paddle sports is unsettling. True, more people are paddling in extreme conditions. Yet it is not those folks getting hurt. Over 90% of paddling deaths are people just learning the sport. People with little to no experience. This is why Rubicon concentrates on teaching skills rather than renting equipment. The CRQ went off in perfect weather yesterday with a record setting performance by man about town Carter Johnson. The four man team of birthday girl Jen Fuller, Devina Horstmann, Michael Melville, and me had a blast doing the 25 mile section. Thanks for a great time and to all who helped make it a success.

It is Memorial weekend, competent SUP paddlers can be the best rescuers in many situations. SUP paddlers have easiest access to a person. We are connected (leash) to our boards making the paddle board a large personal floatation device. We are much better prepared to preform a rescue over a kayak or canoe. The folks at Rubicon Adventures have been trained in first aid, cpr, swift water rescue and are certified lifeguards. Rubicon has been on many rescue situations, and have been official volunteer rescue paddlers for Iron Man and several other Triathlons. It is important to be able to recognize a drowning person. 4 years ago today, I spent 10 days, running the Rio Usumacinta and Agua Azul with this noble gang of whitewater folks. After spending that much time with no outside interference-no internet, no news.
We got back and the world had changed. Something called covid, stores were closed, airline flights were canceled, you couldn't buy toilet paper, it was total chaos. Should have just stayed on the river.

It’s that time of year again and Merchants & Millers has olive oil almost ready to go. Due to the late season and low harvest, there will only be 20 cases of the 2023 Olio Nuovo to make your holidays easier and tastier. It was a great harvest and the oil is tasting fabulous and ready for your culinary pleasure. There are 30 cases of the 2022 Sonoma Blend which is still tasting excellent.

This year, shipping will be done as soon as possible with the last shipping day Dec 18. I am waiting (patiently) for the Olio Nuovo!!!

As in previous years, 10% of sales will go to Reach for Home, www.reachforhome.org, an excellent organization that helps get people back on their feet after tough times. Last year, $832 was donated! They have been instrumental in helping misplaced fire and pandemic families for the past seven years. This year is no different and Merchants & Millers is glad to help.
