"Noyo Harbor, Fort Bragg, CA -September 1980
“Fort Bragg Fisherman Lost At Sea
“Fisherman Robert L. Snider, 66, Fort Bragg, died at sea late Sunday after the 32-foot boat on which he worked lost power and drifted onto the rocks a half mile north of Noyo Bay, the Mendocino County Coroner's Office said.
“The fishing boat Ahoy was owned by David Hortsman, who was piloting the vessel when it developed problems in the fuel line and hit the rocks about 9:40 p.m.
“Hortsman radioed a ‘Mayday’ and awakened Snider, who was below deck, and the pair started swimming for shore. Hortsman was able to save himself, but Snider was lost at sea and his body was not recovered for several hours.
“A native of Indiana, Snider moved to Fort Bragg four years ago from Napa, where he worked for the Basalt Construction Co.
“He is survived by his wife, Mae Snider, Fort Bragg; daughters, Marietta Minix and Christina Rogers, both of Napa; two sisters, both of California, and four grandchildren.
“Family services were today at the Cannarr-Fairlee Funeral Home, Fort Bragg. Cremation followed at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Ukiah.
“The family prefers memorials be sent to the Noyo Commercial Fisherman's Wives, Fort Bragg.”

"Northern California – September 1941
“Louis Cavallini Is Promoted: Made Manager Of A. Paladini Holdings
“Louis Cavallini, local manager for A. Paladini Fish Company, last week received quite a promotion when he was made manager of Paladini’s holdings in Mendocino, Humboldt, and Del Norte counties.
“Cavallini has been with Paladini for the past four years and he has made quite a record for himself. He has been associated with the fishing industry on the Noyo for the past 18 years and is well-qualified.”

An earlier post by Pamela Holmes on Mendocino History:
"From the collection of Sterling and Alice Holmes-First Noyo Bridge 1880. Second bridge and Noyo home owed by Harry Holmes. This is the bridge that failed when a fuel oil truck was crossing. . Sterling Holmes as a young lad gave boat rides in this skif across the river while the bridge was not functional."

Noyo Harbor, Fort Bragg, CA – September 1975
“Coast Guard Assists Distressed Boats
“The U.S. Coast Guard at Noyo responded to three distress calls recently. On September 4, the Cape Windy, a 60-foot fishing boat owned by Paul M. Douglas, Mendocino, was reported adrift four miles off Point Cabrillo with a faulty reduction gear.
“The Coast Guard received a call for assistance at 8 p.m. and towed the boat to Noyo Harbor, arriving at 11 p.m.
“The 36-foot fishing boat Luna was escorted to Noyo September 7 after it was reported taking on water 20 miles west of Fort Bragg about 2:15 am. The boat is owned by Mark Winthers, of Whitethorn.
“The Sunshine, a 38-foot sailboat owned by Robert Frank, of San Francisco, was disabled at the entrance to the Noyo River September 7.
“The steering apparently went out on the boat. It was towed in and moored by the Coast Guard at 3:05 p.m.”

F/V Princess shout-out to the community:

"We have some updates for y’all about our fire situation. But first we’d like to offer some heart felt thank you’s to some folks in our community who helped us get up and running on the north deck within 48 hours. Just in time to cater a long planned wedding party on Friday and function for one of the biggest holiday weekends of the year. There’s no way we could’ve pulled this off without you guys, we will be forever grateful.

FBFD, Mendocino Sheriffs Dept. Clint Wyant for letting us borrow that beautiful grill, Scott Hockett for letting us use the keg chiller, JP McCormick for putting on those tool bags and jumping right in, Jaime n Kevin Madusa, for coordination & clean up, Harbormaster Anna Neumann for coordinating and helping with key details, local musicians Kevin Green & Chris Cisper for performing for free AND donating all their tips to our crew, Sean Hull, Derrick Maxey and especially to our amazing staff."

A post by Barbara Healy Stickel:

"Fort Bragg, CA – September 1953 (2 Parts)
(1) “20-Foot Fishing Boat is Missing
“Coast Guardsmen are searching for the 20-foot fishing boat Alice H, with skipper Charles Hoffman and a crew of one, lost in heavy fog off the coast here last night.
“Fishermen became disturbed when the Alice H failed to put into port last night and called the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard rescue boat searched the coastline to 10 Mile River, about 10 miles north of Fort Bragg, and carried the search for some distance out to sea.
“The search was carried out for about 5 hours with no sight of the boat, which has no radio. The Coast Guard was hopeful that the boat might have anchored in one of the small coves along the coast when the heavy fog started rolling in.”
Santa Rosa Press Democrat, September 10, 1953, p. 6, col. 4.
(2) “Boat Back Safe in Harbor
“The Alice H, a 20-foot fishing boat, reported missing Wednesday night, returned safely to Noyo Harbor yesterday evening.
“The Coast Guard said the boat had apparently passed the harbor buoy in the dense fog and had gone too far north.
“Worried fishermen noticed that the boat was not at its mooring place Wednesday night and notified the Coast Guard Patrol. The patrol searched the area north of Noyo to Ten-Mile River and some distance out to sea for about 5 hours before returning to Noyo without sighting the craft.
“Captain of the Alice H is Charles Hoffman.”

Noyo Harbor, Fort Bragg, CA – September 1975
“Coast Guard Call: ‘Capsized Kayaks’ Were Paddleboards
“A report of kayaks capsized in the ocean off Todd's Point, Fort Bragg, August 27 proved to be false. But there were persons in the water.
“At 3:55 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard at Noyo received a call from the Fort Bragg Police Department asking them to check the Todd's Point area for persons in distress. When the Coast Guard's 25-foot vessel arrived at the scene at 4:02, the crew found that the ‘kayaks’ were in fact paddleboards and the persons in the water were divers looking for abalone, a Coast Guard spokesman said Tuesday.
“A few hours later, the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Point Ledge went to the aid of the 38- foot fishing boat Nina, which was in trouble five miles due west of Rockport.
“The boat, owned by John A. Thompson, Fort Bragg, was disabled with a broken blower drive shaft. It was moored at Noyo at 11:30 p.m.
“On August 28, the Verna A II, owned by Calvin Armstrong, Fort Bragg, volunteered to deliver gas to the 24-foot Wine Nipper, which was disabled eight and a half miles northwest of Fort Bragg.
“The boat, owned by Bryant Gomes, of Lodi, was reported in trouble at 11:45 p.m.
“The Verna A, which was heading out of Noyo on a fishing trip when the distress call was received, delivered 15 gallons of gas to the vessel, enabling it to make it to Noyo at 3:45 the next morning.”
Mendocino Coast Beacon, September 4, 1975, p. 2, col. 2.
