If you’re looking for a good weekend wander, take a trip to the Mendocino Headlands State Park! With panoramic views of the ocean and historic downtown Mendocino, this state park is one of our favorites. Breathe deep at Cypress Grove at the north end of town, then head south along the coast. Just south of Main Street, you’ll find a trail down to Portuguese Beach, or if you prefer to stay on the bluffs, check out the sinkhole, blowhole, and totem.

From there, we like to stop at Papa Bear’s Chocolate Haus to pick up a sweet treat before heading to the Ford House Museum and finishing up with a beach day at Big River.

In honor of the Little River Whale Festival, this week’s is Ironwood, a luxurious 3-bed, 2-bath home with lots of natural light, 3 acres of land, and forest and partial ocean views.

A short drive away from Van Damme State Park and Beach, Ironwood is the ideal home base for this weekend’s festivities, which include a campfire and s’mores night at Van Damme State Beach, as well as educational Whale Walks at Spring Ranch. You can also drive up to Noyo Harbor for whale-watching tours to see our cetacean visitors from the water.

This weekend, the Whale Festival comes to Little River! Enjoy festivities and educational programs amidst beautiful views of the Mendocino Coast and the Pacific, starting Friday, March 7, 6 - 7 PM with the
Van Damme State Beach Whale Festival Campfire Program. (Who doesn't love "whale trivia, stories, songs, s'mores and cocoa" on the beach at sunset?)

California State Park Interpreters will also lead whale walks at Spring Ranch on Saturday at 12 and 1 pm 🐳

Van Damme State Beach Whale Festival Campfire Program. Whale trivia, stories, songs, s'mores and cocoa. Watch the sunset on the beach while learning why we celebrate the charismatic cetacean of the season, the Eastern Pacific Gray Whale.

Saturday, March 8, 10 AM

Spring Ranch Whale Walk, Join a California State Park Interpreter to walk the historic Van Damme Spring Ranch property while spotting gray whales. Learn why whales migrate and why we celebrate the Whale Festive. Participants can park and meet in the Highway 1 pull-out north of Spring Ranch barns and across from Gordon Lane in Mendocino. Binoculars provided.

The groundhog may have seen his shadow this past weekend, but the good news is that even in winter, the Mendocino Coast will warm your heart. Our weather is often brisk but temperate, and the rolling waves are spectacular this time of year!
