Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is a truly stunning place. It was designed as an architectural project symbolizing global unity. It took 12 years to build and was completed in 2008. The prayer area of the mosque in the courtyard is the size of 6 foot fields and can hold 40,000+ people praying. The courtyard also has the largest mosaic in the world. Just looking at pictures it’s hard to feel the scale of this enormous and beautiful place.
🕌 It is the third largest mosque in the world, covering 30 acres (12 hectares) and accommodating over 41,000 worshippers at once.
🕌The mosque boasts seven crystal chandeliers, with the largest weighing 12 tons and made of stainless steel, brass, and gold. Again, pictures don’t do them justice!
🕌 Home to the world's largest hand-knotted carpet, it took 1,200 workers over a year to complete.
🕌 The mosque features 82 domes, with the largest reaching 270ft (84 meters) high.
Another fun fact which we thought was highly amusing was that there is a McDonald’s a Starbucks, a Costa, a Pinkberry, and many other restaurants and shops right at the mosque! 🕌

The port of Khasab in Oman was probably one of the most interesting ports I’ve ever been to. I woke up in the morning, looking out of my window only to see hundreds of boats speeding down beneath us and yelling as the boatmen were busy trading their wares ( I posted a video of this earlier!). We are only 40 miles from the Iranian border here so there is a lot of clandestine trade going on between villagers across the water. The Iranians bring over goats 🐐 and sheep 🐑 which are considered a delicacy by the locals and take back electronics such as iPhones, which they purchase locally in the village.
🐟 The local Omani people are traditional fishermen who live in small villages along the coastline (many accessible only by boat). They catch mainly tuna. We had some for lunch, freshly caught and delicious! During the daytime, the little villages and surroundings are pretty much silent as all the men are sleeping, and the women are in the houses. The men fish only at night when it is cool and the fish are biting. There are no nets allowed, only rod fishing. This has been the traditional way of life for centuries in this area.
18 years ago a new highway was built to Dubai, which is approximately 2 to 3 Hours drive away. This has changed life for the locals who can now go shopping in big city Dubai on the weekends - and in turn, the Dubai residents come up here to camp on the beaches for the weekend (there is only one small hotel in town).
The local economy is based solely on fishing and trading. The fish are taken to Dubai daily or traded with the nearby Iranians. Dates are also a staple here with thousands of Date Palms growing in this coastal desert oasis town.
Oman is one of the most wealthy countries in the world with an economy based on oil, gas and gold reserves. The local villagers are supported by the central Oman government who provide them with free electricity, Internet, water, and all other necessities. Life is pretty basic and simple for the locals, but they do live a nice lifestyle. As with most rural areas, the young people are leaving and moving to the cities to work.
During our visit, we saw the local mosque, beautiful beaches and mountains, Khasab Castle (built by the Portuguese in the 16th century), the small town of Khasab and took a beautiful boat ride along the fjords. We saw dolphins and went swimming as well.
It was a super interesting and unique day! These are the kind of special places that I love!
Once again, the locals could not have been more friendly and welcoming.

Yesterday in Oman, we visited Khasab Castle, a historic fortress located in Khasab, Musandam, Oman. Built by the Portuguese in the 17th century on top of an ancient fort, the castle has a rich historical significance. The Portuguese originally constructed it to control the strategic Strait of Hormuz between Iran and Oman but were expelled by the Omanis around 1624. After the Omanis took control, they repurposed it as a military base and residence for the Wali of Khasab. Now the castle is a museum. The apple tree in the courtyard is 400 years old!

🥂🍾🛳️ Have you ever been such a super VIP that a cruise line opens a ship for you at the start of their new season, the night before anyone else gets on board?! Hehehehe 🥂🍾😍🙌🏝️👍😎. So grateful- especially after 24 hours traveling from Los Angeles to Doha. My clients arrived about an hour ago and now I’m here as well. Thank you Celestyal Cruises for the VIP treatment for my clients and I!! We will be docked here for the next couple of days while we attend the Formula One races then off for our next adventure through the Middle East!
