This statue in the city of Rijeka honors milkmaids, or mlikarice in Croatian, who before the 1990s, everyday walked from their dairy farms in the town of Grobnik carrying milk containers, sometimes weighing around 150 pounds, to deliver milk to city residents. The journey was about 9 miles in one direction, meaning they walked around 18 miles each day. This route became known as the Milkyway🐄🥛

The winter season in Croatian is called Zima, lasting from December through February❄️Winter in Croatia is cold and if it’s windy even colder🌨️It’s rare to snow near the sea, it’s more likely to just rain, but nearby mountain tops are covered with powder🏔️The most popular activity in winter is skiing, especially in the Gorski Kotar region🎿Platak Ski Resort is only a 45 minute drive from our rental apartments and nearby Mrkopalj is known for their cross-country skiing⛷️Tourist locations are much less crowded and accommodations and flights are at their lowest prices after New Year’s🏂Just when you think the partying is over after December’s many holidays, you get thrown back in to more festivities with the beginning of Carnival in January that continues through the rest of winter☃️

Saint Lucy or Sveta Lucija is celebrated throughout the country on December 13th ✨ In some southern and northeastern parts of Croatia, Saint Lucy was the one who brought children presents 🎁 Nowadays, on this day it is popular to plant Christmas Wheat, or Božićna pšenica in Croatian 🌱 It is believed that the taller the wheat grows, the more prosperous the new year will be. This tradition dates back to times when agriculture was the main economic activity. By Christmas Eve, the wheat should be tall and bright green and is tied with a ribbon in red, white and blue, the colors of the Croatian flag. This day is usually accompanied with a large feast. Saint Lucy was one of the earliest Christian martyrs and was killed by the Romans for her religious beliefs. She is known as the patron saint of virgins, sight and the city of Syracuse, Sicily.

This town has had numerous cultures leave their mark over the centuries, including the Japods, Romans, Ostrogoths, Greeks, Lombards and Slavs. The old town gate, square, loggia and Church of St. Jelene Križarice are still well preserved and remains of the Crekvina, fort and town walls can also be seen.
