The 3rd Infantry Regiment, the very first American Regiment, was constituted 3 June 1784 in the regular Army consisting of companies from Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania; the first Commander was Josiah Harmar. Second Battalion was designated as Company B, 3rd Infantry Regiment on 22 May 1816. It fought with the Regiment during the Mexican War, and distinguished itself in such significant battles as Palo Alto, Churubusco, and Chapultepec. On the morning of 14 September 1847, it stood with the first units to raise the Stars and Stripes over the “Halls of Montezuma”. The Regiment next campaigned in the American West during the Indian Wars where Company B saw action against the Seminoles, Comanche and the Nez Perce. When the American Civil War began, the 3rd Infantry was again called into action. As a member of Syke’s Battalion of Regulars, the Regiment fought at the First Battle of Bull Run as part of 1st Brigade, 2nd Division. After distinguishing itself in the first conflict of the war, the 3rd Infantry went on to fight in every major conflict until the war’s end. During the War with Spain, the 3rd Infantry Regiment distinguished itself during the Battle of Santiago. At the turn of the century the regiment found itself fighting the Philippine Insurrection. The men of the 3rd Infantry Regiment were cited for their valorous actions during such notable conflicts as Malolos, San Isidro and Luzon. On 1 July 1957 Company B was reorganized and redesignated as HHC , 2nd Battle Group, 3rd Infantry. On 23 March 1966, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment was activated for the first time at Fort Benning, Georgia. After activation, 2-3 IN was assigned to the 199th Light Infantry Brigade and sent to Vietnam. 2nd Battalion operated in the Bien Hoa Province from 1967 to 1968 and throughout the Long Binh Province until 1969. The Battalion was cited for valor for its actions in Saigon-Long Binh and the men of 2nd Battalion distinguished themselves through their actions in both Tet and Sanctuary Counter offenses. CPL Michael Fleming Folland earned the Medal of Honor for his actions on 3 July 1969 while on patrol in Long Khanh Province. CPL Folland with complete disregard for his safety threw himself on a gr***de that would have killed numerous members of his element. 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment was inactivated on 15 October 1970 at Fort Benning, Georgia. The Battalion was reactivated on 16 March 2001, at Fort Lewis, WA and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom I and II. The Regiment served in Balad, Iraq from 7 December 2003 to 22 January 2004. It then moved to eastern Mosul, Iraq on 23 January 2004, as part of 3rd Brigade, 2 IN DIV which replaced the 101st ABN DIV. The Regiment participated in numerous raids and patrols which captured or killed numerous terrorists and provided a much safer Area of Operation while facilitating the rebuilding of Mosul. The Regiment also participated in operations in Samarra, Najaf, Baghdad, and Tall Afar; it was the choice of force in theater. The Regiment was relieved in October 2004 and sent back to Fort Lewis, WA where a new group of Patriots consolidated, reorganized and began the difficult road to prepare for future combat operations. The Battalion was trained and certified for combat in February 2006 after completing a tour at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California. 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division was ordered to deploy in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in June 2006. The Patriots deployed in June 2006 and were assigned to Multinational Division North, 25th Infantry Division in the city of Mosul with the Headquarters based at Forward Operating Base Marez. In December 2006 the Patriots were assigned to Multinational Division Baghdad, 1st Cavalry Division in the capital city of Baghdad. The Battalion conducted combat operations throughout Iraq , with a focus on Baghdad and a home station at Camp Striker which is part of the Victory Base Complex at the Baghdad International Airport (BIAP). The Battalion’s one year tour was extended to 15 months in April 2007 as part of the “Iraq Surge Plan” In 2009 the Battalion was once again called on by the nation for a third deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division was ordered to deploy in August 2009. The Patriots deployed to Iraq and were assigned to Multinational Division North, 25th Infantry Division in Diyala Province. The Patriots were officially called Task Force Patriots and were based at Forward Operating Base Normandy. Its main area of operation was in the Muqdadiyah Qa’daa and surrounding cities. Throughout the 10 month tour of duty, the Patriots refurbished the predominant market in Eastern Iraq, continued to combat insurgents, and trained Iraqi Policemen and Soldiers. Fittingly, the Patriots, who were called to battle enemy hotspots throughout the first two Iraq tours, closed out their third by transferring complete responsibility of security for the last former Al Qaeda stronghold over to Iraqi authorities on 25 May 2010. The Patriots were extremely successful in their mission, bringing security and stability to a volatile region. Their efforts will forever have a lasting impact on the sovereignty of Iraq and on America's partnership with them for years to come.

For those in our Highlander Company family who cannot make it tonight, the most important information we will be sharing is contained below. Our Soldiers have a busy fiscal year ahead of them; the training cycle is intensifying to support 2-2 SBCT in their progression to the National Training Center (NTC), help the National Guard increase their readiness to fight, and prepare for our own train-up to get ready for NTC next year.

With the amount that our Soldiers will be training, and in light of the strain that prolonged absences place upon our households, attached is a contact sheet for numbers to call for help while developing and implementing coping methods until the Soldiers return from exercises.

We hope to see everyone available at the meeting tonight at the Family Resource Center on JBLM (Fort Lewis Main Post near 7th Division Headquarters) at 1730! We will have information, as well as a bit of socializing and some light refreshment.

Congratulations, Cpl. Hallworth!
