Did you know softshell turtles have incredible camouflage and speed, making up for their lack of a hard shell? Unlike their hard-shelled cousins, softshell turtles have a flexible, leathery shell that allows them to zip through the water at up to 10 mph speeds! 🐢

Their long necks and snorkel-like nostrils help them hide their bodies under the sediment while keeping their noses at the surface to breathe. As their nesting season approaches, watch out for these guys coming on shore to lay their eggs in the next couple of months here at Gulf State Park!

🌊 We mention the term "rip current" frequently, but what exactly is a rip current? It is a strong, narrow current of water flowing away from shore. Rip currents commonly form around breaks in sandbars and near jetties/piers. It's a natural treadmill traveling as fast as 8 feet per second - that is faster than an Olympic swimmer.

🏊 For that reason, rip currents are life-threatening to anyone entering the surf!
