This is a green darner dragonfly. If you’ve been on the beaches lately, we’ve seen a ton of (smaller/black) dragonflies. So what’s the deal? ⁉️ dragonflies eat mosquitos 🦟 so we welcome them with open…wings? 😜 where mosquitos breed, so will dragonflies. When we have a lot of rain (rainy season!!) we have a lot more standing water, which leads to mosquitos which will lead to dragonflies. 🏝️ some stories say that dragonflies are a loved one checking in on you as well. 💙 either way, it’s part of life living or visiting SWFL especially in the summer months, so enjoy!

🚩 Red drift algae 🔎 What is it?

Also known as macro algae (due to the size), it is NOT harmful or un-natural - blue green algae is a whole ‘nother issue. It is NOT red tide. Red drift algae starts as growing on the ocean or gulf bottom or other hard surfaces (like rocks). It’s a good algae that puts nutrients into the ecosystem and gives animals another source of food or habitat.

💨 When the water is warm it tends to rip up and in the early spring months like March, windy weather blows it in towards land.

🪸 It may smell on the beaches as it decays, but younger turtles will use it for food and a resting place off shore, birds will often be found looking for food in it, and it helps stop coastal erosion on the beaches during rainy months.

💙 It is normal, it tends to happen every year, and no it’s not dangerous.

An overcast day scared all the boaters away 🌥️ but the beaches were empty, dolphins and manatees were out and it was easy to get in at for some lunch 🐬🏝️
