Seeking to provide opportunities and advancements for students that follow in future generations, the Cancer Research Program engages not only the populace of FGCU, but also strengthens the relationships between students and the community. Through learning by doing, the Cancer Research Program teaches students how to run an investigative outreach program. Students from diverse disciplines have com

e together to envision a program that will benefit the community and embolden FGCU’s mission as a university. Working with faculty, students will generate crucial ties that lead to sustainable relationships between undergraduates and professors. As a program designed to promote cancer research and community advocacy, the Cancer Research Program will bolster the research curriculum of FGCU and offer vast opportunities of involvement for students who wish to pursue graduate degrees. The Cancer Research Program allows students of all different backgrounds to come together and form ties rooted in the desire to support the community. Students from diverse disciplines involved in the program will learn important skills such as how to write grants, form community partner relations, seek local and national stakeholders, and host large scale events within the community. The guiding principles of FGCU have very much inspired the FGCU Cancer Research Program. As it reads in the FGCU mission statement and vision, “informed and engaged citizens are essential to the creation of a civil and sustainable society.” As a student run organization designed to provide real world experience for future students, this guiding principle has become the foundation of what we strive to be. As a multifaceted program, we hope to invigorate the curriculum by providing another outlet for student ingenuity and we hope to enhance community relationships through our service. Because of FGCU, we strive to become attentive alumni as well as life-long learners and leaders in our greater community.

I have the best research students! This is why I do what I do - not for the nice words (though they sure help on tough days) but to mentor the next generation of scientist, researchers, and physicians. Mentors - what you do matters. Students - you’re capable of so much more than you may think. Reach high eagles!

Our Member of the Month is Meghan Seth

Here is a little bio about her:

"Hi everyone! Hope everyone is doing well. My name is Meghan Seth. I am from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I am a senior majoring in Biology with a pre-professional concentration. I am currently preparing for the MCAT and applying for this upcoming cycle. I’ve been doing research with Dr. Rhodes for the past three semesters. I really enjoy working with the ER-positive breast cancer cell line, MCF-7. I find it fascinating seeing these novel stilbene analogues created by Dr. Paul having an effect on the ER-positive cell viability. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and pets."

Although not cancer related, our Historian, Taylor McCabe is a part of the COVID-19 Antibody research study on campus. Depicted in the photos below, Taylor retrieves a blood sample from an individual, where it is tested for the positive markers of IgG or IgM, which are associated with COVID-19 antibodies!

One of our focuses of the Cancer Research Program is providing and encouraging our students to get involved with research. We will be having a meeting on February 23rd at 5:30pm over Microsoft Teams, where different professors will be sharing their research and how our students can get involved!
