Omega Mapping Services (omegamapping.com) is a mapping company dedicated to affordable capture of above and below ground images of your property. Using multiple elements (aerial and satellite images, GPS, Ground Penetrating Radar), we create a site overview and digitally draw printable (PDF) as-built maps. These maps are linked to inexpensive data management software in order to keep information r
elated to your property, both above ground and underground, up-to-date and manageable. Utility Discovery:
Omega creates as-built maps of utility locations. An as-built map is a set of digital drawings that show the exact dimensions, geometry and location of all elements of the work completed under the contract. These maps provide and image of what is above/below the surface of your property. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) can be calibrated to capture images through asphalt, concrete, rock, turf, etc. A (charged) pipe made of PVC, concrete, or metal can be located underground, as well as rock and fiber-optic cable. Are you looking for a paved-over water valve or man-hole cover? We find those frequently, as well. We create as-built maps for municipal administrators. Recently, Omega was contacted by the city of Cornelia, Georgia. Like many municipalities, precise knowledge of their downtown water system was limited. Pipes were located by the most-informed employee’s best guess. In the event of a problem, the city had to cut the water to the entire downtown area as it repaired an isolated issue. Omega helped them locate and map their pipes and more importantly, their valves, so they could adjust water flow appropriately in the event of future issues. In addition, we are available to respond in a timely manner to unexpected problems occurring in unmapped areas. Omega helps to prevent further undo headache or expense. Considering depth limitations (10-15 feet), locating the problem area is a very attainable possibility. Until time to confirm and repair said problem, you can leave your shovel in the truck. The process of digging is not only time consuming but often futile. Consider a leak where the leaked fluid travels deeper underground instead of surfacing. Normally, it would be necessary to dig many linear feet of pipe to unearth the leak. Using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to pinpoint the issue from the surface is available. Cemetery Discovery:
We draw as-built maps of cemeteries. An as-built map is a set of digital drawings that show the exact dimensions, geometry and location of all elements of the work completed under contract. The affordable capture of above and below ground images offered is an asset for any cemetery. The exact (sub-meter accurate) location of every burial is captured by integrating the aforementioned aerial and satellite (GPS) images. If you suspect unmarked graves, we can scan small or large areas with Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). Omega links each GPR discovery to our as-built cemetery map. We photograph every grave marker and link it to burial locations in an alphabetized cemetery roster with a grid overlay on the maps to easily locate burials. Omega Mapping Services’ geo-referenced maps can also help trustees and sextons layout new burial space for future interments with available cemetery acreage and grave diggers know with confidence before they dig. Free demonstrations at the property in question are available upon request. Omega Mapping has an extensive list of former satisfied clients (both in utility and cemetery discovery) who would be available to speak in regards to work rendered in the past. Dear Meta, my clients use the page frequently each week.
Here's a good one...Thank you Myron for the share...
“Taking your kids to cemeteries is a little…dark, don’t you think?”
No, no I don’t think.
I’m concerned we don’t visit them ENOUGH.
Cemeteries are absolute gold mines in terms of historical empathy, historical orientation, and contextual conversations. As Christians, visiting cemeteries gives a unique opportunity to discuss our faith.
We visit people who likely haven’t had visitors in a long, long time.
We look at interesting names, and try to see who is related.
We study the dates, figure out how old the person was, and I put their lives in historical context:
-What events were happening during their lifetime?
-How might these events have impacted their daily life, belief system, social norms, etc.?
-What events have transpired since the person’s death land how might these events affect our current world?
Visiting a cemetery also reminds us how short life is—something that puts everything in perspective.
We aren’t here long, and the things that seem so big….aren’t really so big. It’s been a while since I’ve had a cemetery lesson, and seeing this picture reminds me how important they are.
Go. Visit.
It’s not “dark”, it’s rich.
It’s not depressing, it’s enlightening.
It orients us to (and humanizes) the past,
stimulates historical empathy,
and gives amazing opportunity to understand the impact historical events had on the lives of real people.
Take your kids to the cemetery.

Kudos to Iredell Library!
Bravo
In 2022, North Carolina Humanities awarded a Large Grant to Iredell County Public Library to conduct ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys of Green Street Cemetery to discover unmarked graves and help establish the cemetery as a designated historic site. The cemetery is thought to be the oldest cemetery in Statesville and the largest in the county for formerly enslaved peoples.
The final report for this GPR survey has been published, and can be read online at https://iredell.lib.nc.us/DocumentCenter/View/5070/FINAL-Green-Street-Cemetery-Research-Report.
Thank you to all of the community partners who made this project possible:

Lowe's, who not only made generous donations of equipment and supplies, but organized employees to assist with volunteer work.
And of course, thank you to the community members who came out and supported this project, asked questions, made suggestions, provided information, and shared stories of their family history concerning Green Street. We look forward to continuing to assist in research and future preservation collaborations to share the legacy of this community.
One of the most rewarding projects Omega Mapping Services ever preserved.
The folks at Iredell County Public Library are commended for their determination to preserve the rich heritage buried in Green Street Cemetery on behalf of generations that follow.

WSB article about the burials at Chastain
Golfers at North Fulton Golf Course in Buckhead's Chastain Park were surprised to learn a surveyor discovered as many as 84 old and unmarked graves just feet from the fifth green.
Here's another story from Chastain Park... https://www.atlantamagazine.com/news-culture-articles/cemetery-discovered-near-buckhead-chastain-golf-course/
Check out this Cemetery Mapping story Omega Mapping Services did in 2014:
Dead bodies . . . dozens of 'em . . . buried beneath a golf course . . . in Georgia. Sounds like a movie, or the gruesome end to Atlanta's latest crime spree. Instead, the remains of more than 80 people detected underneath North Fulton Golf Course at Chastain Park on Atlanta's north side have bee...

Have you ever seen gravestones that have become so worn over time that they are practically unreadable? Well, I ran into a #cemeterian in Indiana that showed me a clever, noninvasive method to be able to read the unreadable. Take a look!
Hey there! I just found a couple of unmarked burials using ground penetrating radar. Take a look with me real quick and I'll show you what an underground discovery looks like on my screen...
Hey, pal! I've been in the business of finding unmarked graves in cemeteries since 2007, and I can't wait to tell you all the stories I've accumulated since then. Stories of reconnected families, forgotten war heros, of tragedy and triumph. They are all there at your local cemetery if you know where to look. For those of you that have never heard of what I do, I travel across the country to cemeteries that need my help in finding unmarked graves and locating available cemetery plots. After that, I use equipment that allows me to precisely map the exact location of not only the unmarked graves, but the whole cemetery. I've met a whole lot of interesting people along the way, and have heard a whole lot of interesting stories that I'm going to start sharing with you here. Maybe you might want to share with me some of your own! Well, I've still got a long day ahead, and a long week. We'll catch up soon, ok?
