Songs can definitely vary when it comes to the structure. How often do you include an instrumental solo in your song?
06/28/2022
This week’s tip will take your songwriting to the next level!
Co-write! Two heads are better than one. If you have been a ‘solo’ writer your entire career, nothing will expand your creativity like co-writing. In Nashville this is the norm. Find someone
that compliments your talents.

“Focus on the Solution Not the Problem. A songwriter who’s got his or her heart set on making it here doesn’t focus on how hard it is. They focus on writing, performing, improving their skills and getting in front of the right audience!”

Make sure you keep this week’s tip in mind when writing lyrics!
Don’t Put an Age on Your Singer! All singers want to come across as young! If your lyric talks about having a teenage kid, for example, then the singer would have to be around 40. Alan Jackson and Keith Urban are both old enough to be grandpas, but they do not want to come across that way to their fans!!

Want to increase your chances of an artist cutting your song? Check out this week’s tip!
Pare Down Your Syllables Wherever You Can! I know in today’s market there are a lot of “wordy” lyrics out there. However, it still needs to sound “easy to sing.” So, if it sounds like you’re cramming in too many syllables, it’s going to put off an artist from wanting to sing your song.

In order for your song to tell a story, the lyrics should be relatively easy to follow. Read this week’s tip to learn how to accomplish that!
Be Consistent. This may sound obvious, but believe it or not, I’ve seen lyrics where the verses take place in the day time and the chorus takes place at night. Or one minute you’re at a bar, the next you’re at home on the front porch.

Be Flexible! Don’t be so stuck on a line that you love that you can’t hear a co-writer’s options!
You may not end up using either line (lyric or melody) but you never know where that open
mind will lead you.

05/10/2022
We hope this week’s tip inspires you!
Don’t be afraid. For me the hardest thing I did was make that first call to a publisher when I moved to Nashville. He didn’t answer, so I left a message. He didn’t call me back. Amazing, but I survived the experience. I kept persisting ‘til someone finally did call me back.

This week’s tip will help you to push yourself - keep reading to find out how!
Don’t settle. Be your own toughest critic. If you think a line might be too cliché then you KNOW a Nashville publisher is going to say that.
