The Menhaden situation - Its not over. Actually, its just getting started. We have generated intense interest grabbing the attention of both sides. The press coverage is ramping up, many articles to follow. Some very big environmental groups have been asking what can we do, its impressive.
A plan is almost in place, it needs to be correct. We can yell and scream all we want (you and I) but if its directed to the wrong people, the people who actually makes the decisions wont hear our concerns. Some supporters who are vocal about the Menhaden situation are being contacted, by phone and email. Some, are being harassed by the people who make the most money off the fishery (not the 20% percenters aka the small time fisherman). If you are contacted by the lobbyists, take the high road, try to listen and be kind. We will, in the end, make a change and they know it.
Good news:
We have their attention.
We have the backing of local commercial fisherman, they also want sustainable limits on menhaden. Thank you for having our back, we have yours!
We the people have a voice by way of a vote. If a politician (any party) is not doing the right thing, voice your opinion and if they don't listen vote them out.
Stay tuned, read up on the situation, knowledge is power. An educated activist is a very dangerous force to recon with, the past has proven this.

We are getting together a target list on who to contact about the Menhaden AKA Bunker Fish situation in our waters. So many are reaching out asking how to help, we heard you. Sit tight, we will be asking for your help soon.
Boaters, if you are out on the water and see these Omega Protein Menhaden factory ships, follow, watch and take photos, many photos. Some bycatch and the dolphins, whales, sharks, turtles and other things that are caught in the nets and on board their ships in photos are powerful and evidence. NO PHOTOS, NO EVIDENCE = NO EVENT.
Look at what happened to the 32-year-old whale called "OWL" the other day up north! If that whale watching boat and the people that were on it, didn't get the photos of the event with "OWL" the whale "it didn't happen". YES, 80 people saw it happen but without the photos they shot, it is hearsay. BUT they did get photos of the event and the herring company that entrapped OWL the whale is being investigated.
We want a sustainable menhaden population, something that's good for the menhaden reduction fleets, commercial bait industry, sports fisherman, the whales and everything that's in the ocean. This way everyone's happy and we get to still see these photos of whale lunge feeding on Menhaden in our waters. (Photo Artie Raslich/Gotham Whale)

10th Large Whale Aerial Survey Completed
On December 8th, the tenth aerial survey of the New York Bight Whale Monitoring Program was completed by the state's contractor, Tetra Tech. The aerial surveys, which began in March, are conducted monthly for the next three years as part of New York State's effort to establish baseline data on large whales in the New York Bight. The Monitoring Program is focused on six large whale species (sei, s***m, humpback, fin, blue, and North Atlantic right whales). Sightings of sea turtles and other marine mammals are also being recorded as time allows. Four of the priority whale species have been seen so far: fin, humpback, s***m, and North Atlantic right whales. Other species seen include minke whales, Cuvier's beaked whales, long-finned pilot whales and several species of dolphins. In the December survey, 2 individual whales and over 900 other marine mammals were recorded . An acoustic survey, also set to run for three years beginning mid-September, will complement the visual surveys by listening for the presence of whales. http://www.dec.ny.gov/lands/108559.html
