Today, we pause to honor the Indigenous peoples who have lived on and cared for this land for thousands of years. San Juan Island holds deep roots in the history of the Coast Salish people, including the Lummi, S’Klallam, Samish, Cowlitz, and others who have called these islands home long before European settlers arrived.

The Coast Salish people lived in harmony with the islands’ natural beauty, relying on the rich waters for fishing, and maintaining deep cultural traditions tied to the land and sea. Their presence is still felt today through their enduring cultural contributions and their ongoing stewardship of these sacred lands.

As we reflect on the history of San Juan Island, we recognize the importance of preserving and respecting Indigenous heritage. Today and every day, we honor the Coast Salish people and their legacy.

Here are some fun facts to fuel your mushroom curiosity: 🍄 Mushrooms are more like animals than plants! While we often think of mushrooms as plants, they’re actually closer to animals in their biological structure. They breathe oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide, just like we do! [Source: Smithsonian Magazine] 🍄 Mushrooms communicate through a ‘wood wide web'. Beneath the forest floor, mushrooms connect to tree roots through mycelium, forming a vast underground network.
