Some of our crew are spending the month of January with the Bremer Canyon orcas off Western Australia (the other WA). We are excited to share stories about this unique population of whales on our tours this season and how they differ from the killer whales of the Salish Sea. Our 2024 tours departing from San Juan Island are available for booking at sjiwhalewatch.com or by phone at 360-378-7996.
Enjoy this quick recap of our first all-day tour of the season. These tours have quickly become a favorite and the longer time on the water allows us to see more and go further! We offer these periodically throughout the season but we also offer daily half-day tours that provide our guests with a high-quality experience seeing all of the wildlife and scenery the Salish Sea has to offer while still being flexible enough to fit in a day trip if you’re not staying on San Juan Island overnight. #orca #killerwhale #seals #sealions #whales #dolphins #eagles #wildlife #sealife #whalewatching #sanjuanisland #fridayharbor #mayaslegacywhalewatching

We always encourage our guests to get excited about everything we see, from the largest whales to the smallest forage fish. Captains Daven and Sara saw this moon jelly at the dock the other evening and spent a few minutes just watching it work it’s way through the water.
Did you know the moon jellies bell can get up to two feet across?!
What cool things have you seen while visiting San Juan Island?

We often see incredible things right from the dock—like this great blue heron catching gunnels. Sara took this yesterday after we pulled in from our morning tour!
We believe every day should be Earth Day and we work hard to inspire and promote conservation of wild places and the creatures we share them with.
Enjoy this moment of T019B “Galiano” and his mom, T019 “Mooyah” taken by Captain Sara.
We had a really cool encounter this evening with a rare visitor to these parts! Captain Jeff spotted this sea otter chowing down on a huge sea urchin and afterwards she did a little people watching before heading off for a post-urchin urchin.
We have seats available this weekend, including a couple left on our first all-day tour of the season on Sunday! Come get out on the water with us and let's see what cool things await us!
Did you know San Juan county has the largest population of Bald Eagles 🦅 next to Alaska. With a wing span of 6-8 feet we easily spot them on the water and delighted when they fly by on our wildlife tours.

Here’s a clip from yesterday’s tour! The T034s, T036As, T037, T037Bs, and the T137s. The little calf is T036A5, born late last year.
Zoomed to 400mm and cropped further for stabilization.

Enjoy this video from yesterday’s tour with the T137s. We had a lovely adventure through the Gulf Islands and saw a range of wildlife, including a swimming eagle! Don’t worry, it made it safely airborn again.
We are running tours every Saturday this month and are open to adding more so give us a call if you’re coming to the island! We also have our spring and summer schedules available for booking. We look forward to hosting you!
BCX1239 “Towers” & Calf
Yesterday, our guests were treated to a visit with an uncommon visitor to our waters—BCX1239 “Towers” and her 2021 calf.
Our crew always gets excited when we “meet” new whales (to us) and yesterday was no exception!
While some of our crew were pulling their crab traps they got a beautiful visit from this bald eagle. Captain Jeff (@orcawild) snagged this slo-mo video.
We’re still running tours and the wildlife has been stunning! Check our website for availability or shoot us an email. We’d love to have you join us!

It was a bit soggy out there today but we had a beautiful visit with Anvil (MMZ0007) the humpback whale.
Anvil is what we call a “Z” whale—the underside of her flukes are almost completely white. “X” whales have 0-20% white, “Y” whales have 20-80% white, and “Z” whales have 80-100% white.

Enjoy this moment with Dall’s porpoise our crew got the other day on their day off—because you know they just can’t stay off the water when fall is this pretty!

Any day with humpback whales is a good day. We love sharing these amazing beings (and their stories!) with our guests and fall is a great time to see them before they make their annual migration to their breeding grounds in Hawaii or Mexico.

The Salish Sea and the waters around the San Juan Islands continue to see incredible encounters with Humpbacks. Watching these amazing animals is always a beautiful sight to behold! 🎥 @wakeuptoadventure
The Magic of Fall
Fall is just around the corner and its magic can be seen and felt everywhere on the island. Yesterday was unimaginable, wildlife in every direction, clouds exploding over the horizon and rainbows that extended from one island to another. Every time we leave the harbor we're so incredibly excited to share this beautiful and dynamic ecosystem with you and your loved ones!
