June 26, 2025 - After leaving Friday Harbr we headed south and crossed the channel to Big Rock to cruise the Lopez coastline. We passed many sleepy harbor seals by Turn Island and Shark Reef. A sleepy looking bald eagle yawned as we sailed by Deadman Island. Made a stop by Whale Rocks to see the Steller sea lions before cruising around Long Island and Hall Island....

June 25, 2025 - With a report of Biggs/Transient orcas (T46C’s and T75C’s) milling for a few hours south of Lawrence Pt bucking the flood tide we decided to head inter-island to see if we could get a chance to see them. We had good speed up Upright Channel passing the pretty coastline near Upright Head. As we were halfway to Peavine Pass the orcas stopped tread milling and flipped north zooming quickly on the strong flooding current away from us....

June 25, 2025 - After leaving Friday Harbor we debated whether to go north or south. We sailed across toward Shaw Island and began to head south when a report came in of a pair of humpback whales south of Flattop Island. We came about and made tracks north passing through the Wasp Islands. Hearing that they were heading northeast up President Channel we kept up our pace with the hopes to catch up with them....

June 24, 2025 - After leaving Friday Harbor we headed north on account of Biggs orcas southbound towards Satellite Channel. While we were in New Channel we heard the orcas continued south in Saanich Inlet and realized we were out of luck. We changed course for Java Rocks and Monarch Head. As we approached Java Rocks a report came in of a pair of active humpback whales north of East Pt, Saturna Island. ...

June 23, 2025 - Headed South from Friday Harbor after a report of orcas coming through Cattle Pass. We drifted through Turn Island pass seeing harbor seals hauled out warming in the morning sun. Black oystercatcher and a bald eagle looked on. We me the Biggs orcas of the T49A family (minus T49A1 and T49A2 ) near Pear Point but instead of taking the coastline they took the fastest part of the flood current and zoomed up at times cruising at 9 knots or so keeping to the thin line on the fast flood....

June 22, 2025 - We had been following reports of a family of Biggs/Transient orcas known as the T65B’s coming inter-island through Thatcher Pass. After leaving Friday Harbor we caught the back eddy up to Turn Island where the flood current carried us nicely up Upright Channel. The orcas turned at Upright Head to come down Upright Channel. We caught up to them near Odlin Park and paralleled them getting some nice views towards Fisherman’s Harbor....

June 16, 2025 - Trip highlights: Great sailing. Many pregnant harbor seals at Shirt Tail Reef, White Rock, Skipjack and Bare Island. Pair of bald eagles in their nest on Flattop Island with a pair of eaglets visible (first time for us spotting the chicks!), adorable black oystercatchers, Steller sea lion in the water at Skipjack Island, stunning views of Mt Baker, Biggs/Transient orcas T65B’s north of Barnes and Clark Islands....

Sailing the Salish Sea

S/V Peniel is a 45' sloop built of Yellow cedar and oak by Prothero Brothers of Seattle in 1956. She's a classic sailboat and she sails beautifully. We depart daily from Spring Street Landing, next to Friday Harbor Ferry Dock. We offer full and half day adventure tours in the San Juan Islands. Barbecued supper available on our full day sails. Captain David and Captain Barbara have a background in whale research and we are the only sailing boat to be members of the Pacific Whale Watch Association. Every trip is another adventure on the Salish Sea - you’re welcome to join us.
