To all of our loyal guests and friends:

Crosswind Landing is taking a pause from hosting guests for 2023. After seven years of hosting guests, we're taking a break from renting to do some improvements and spend some time at the beach ourselves. Thank you so much for making Crosswind Landing a success and look forward to chatting again in the future!

The Bonner Pier opened to the public at 8:00 a.m. on Friday morning, October 1, and roughly 20 visitors with gear in hand were lined up to be among the first to fish off the pier. “We heard that they have been waiting for at least an hour,” said Michael Barber, Public Affairs Specialist for [......

Interested in climbing a lighthouse? While Cape Hatteras Lighthouse will be closed to climbing until later this summer, Bodie Island is open to climb tomorrow. Tickets are available online.

Also note that Ocracoke Light will be open more frequently this year. It's too small to climb, but when the base is open, you can pop in and look at the interior of the light.

Growing up going to beaches on the Jersey shore, it was beaten into me that dunes were strictly off limit to humans. Needless to say, this article surprised me a bit. While neither I nor Crosswind Landing is encouraging anyone to go off and play in the dunes, it's good to know that responsibly exploring Cape Hatteras National Seashore doesn't mean you can't explore some of the more out of the way spots. Dune walk responsibly!

Hatteras Island is an amazing place for seeing neat stuff in the sky. From stargazing to satellite spotting, and from aerial warfare training to meteor showers and natural light shows of distant thunderstorms, there's nothing better than enjoying a beautiful dark evening looking up and out.

Those of you who've seen Wes Snyder's work don't need me to tell you he is an awesome photographer. So it's no surprise that he captured this amazing time lapse photo of a recent Star Link rocket...

Amidst this COVID-19 world, I'm crossing my figures for Hatteras visitors this summer. In case you've been spending your time in quarantine watching Netflix's new geographically-challenged series "Outer Banks", NCDOT Ferries Division has hit social media with a crucial PSA: No matter how hard you try to futz with Google Maps routing options, you will not be able to take a ferry from Chapel Hill to the Outer Banks.

In case you’re bingeing ‘The Outer Banks’ on Netflix and wondering… no, there is not a North Carolina ⛴️ ferry route between Chapel Hill and the Outer Banks. But we can dream, can’t we?

Just got word from our contractor that Crosswind Landing has fared well. No exterior damage and the flooding didn't make it up to the first floor. We'll have some clean-up to do, but no significant damage. We got lucky; I'm seeing lots of damage and flooding elsewhere on the island.

In case you were wondering why Frisco beaches are better than up north, the water temperatures below will help explain. It's not unusual to have 20 degree warmer water than just 40 miles north.

And that 62 in Nags Head was a warm up from 58 yesterday. Brrr.

One of the cool things about hosting a vacation rental home the old fashion way is actually talking to guests. I think I get as excited about their vacation as they do (actually even a little jealous!). I really love the little notes that many of our guests include when they mail their check for the last payment--totally unexpected but always makes me smile. Technology is great and makes things really easy, but it's still great to be able to connect as humans.

It's been a busy winter and I finally made it down to Frisco for the first trip of the spring. It was a quick trip, only 18 hours, but productive, capped off with a quick 30 minute walk on the beach. The beach looks great this year--the winter storms went easy on the beach and it's nice and wide. Water was still a chilly 52 degrees--can't wait for summer! Here are a few pics...

Looks like good news for Frisco, so far. As of 8:00am, the eye of the storm is 150 miles southwest of Frisco, directly over Southport NC. The closest the eye got was 75 miles of Frisco, and peak winds were about 55mph. Biggest issues in Hatteras are multiple ocean overwashes along NC12. Lots of rain water pooling, but no significant flooding to my knowledge.

We never lost power or internet, and the yard looks like the typical aftermath of a very rainy day. I have no reports from the beaches, but I suspect there's significant erosion. Here's a few pics below. Praying for our friends in Cape Fear area, who are right underneath the storm now with 100mph winds.

Florence prep complete. House is locked up and outdoor furniture brought inside. Water and power off. Furniture on ground floor elevated in case things get real bad. Expecting the worst but praying for the best, especially for my year round Hatteras neighbors for whom this island is their home. It was proverbial beatific calm day before the storm.

I also wanted to thank those of you who've checked in with me and shared your thoughts, prayers and offers of help. It is much appreciated.
