Being a female contributor to fishing magazines has not always been a smooth path so I appreciate my regular editors who recognize that credibility and grit in that space comes in all forms...even from former television news anchors. I am especially proud when outlets like Catfish NOW Magazine dedicate an entire issue each year to women who get out there and enjoy fishing. A little bit of an "EEK" and a "YAY" moment today as I officially kick off the build of a brand new website. The brain work and digging deep to determine how I want to shift a bit professionally have been underway for months. I think it was this day in January surrounded by the cold and desolate beauty of Antarctica that I decided I needed to reinvest in myself to compete with the crippling blow that AI and constance Google algorithms are delivering to writers and creatives. The website build will take time but it's a necessary undertaking that is both exciting and anxious as we create it.

What a fun way to explore Calgary...in a sidecar with Rocky Mountain Sidecar Adventures. You get open-air views and find out about all of the best sights in the city. The view from the hilltop over the downtown skyline and the Bow River was awesome. What a creative move Tourism Calgary!

I love learning new outdoor adventures so being able to learn archery today while on assignment in Calgary, Alberta was epic. I channeled my inner Katniss Everdeen at Painted Warriors ranch at the base of the snow-capped Canadian Rocky Mountains. This is NOT a live animal. It is one of many artificial targets in the woods used to train on archery skills by my indigenous guide.

Enjoyed a fabulous day fishing on the Bow River with Quinn Sonia's of Drift Out West Fly Fishing. Despite quite gusty winds at times (as evidenced by my flying hair barometer) and a slower bite, we caught a few white fish and a large rainbow trout. The day was stunning and for anglers this river can be experienced in a more wilderness setting (about an hour from Calgary) and easily accessible close to the city. This scenic experience with an indigenous Cree guide was special. I missed a few takes because I was so in awe at the peacefulness of the snow capped mountains in the distance and the calm of the spruce trees surrounding us.

During a recent visit on assignment I was able to truly appreciate the thousands of volunteer hours that happen every nesting season to give these tiny creatures the best chance of survival.

I’m so very excited to share this story on my Antarctica expedition that just published today for Kinute. It was an experience that forced me to reach deep as a journalist to truly capture in words what I can only describe as a unique emotional journey. I love fishing in remote destinations around the world and as some of these unspoiled places become more appealing to travelers looking for off-the-grid experiences, there is a greater need for balance between tourism and environmental protection to keep them pristine. My latest published story looked deeper into that delicate balance. Thank you to my friends and the best jungle fishing pals Tom Armitage and Emily Armitage for letting me showcase your experience in Guyana and for my friend Navin L. Roopnarain for playing such an important role in the efforts that I highlight in the article.

While it's a thrill to fish for some of the biggest species in the world, and around the world, the truth is...it's grueling. This is something you never see behind the awesome photos. My recent "big fish training" incorporates cardio, rowing, EMOM workouts, circuit training, strength training and pilates to better take on these species that are as much a 1-5x my bodyweight while fighting them in rapids, ocean current and against their supreme home-field advantage.

Women have smaller physical stature and upper body strength than men to begin with and I've had some extremely tough challenges recently with giant species (including a current shoulder injury from the sandbar shark below). It's time to up my game in the gym. Whatever your goals are - nothing is out of reach if you put in the work to achieve them! I've got this.

In a month capped by editors of two major national publications, a book publisher and the publisher of a new outdoor outlet for me reached out to ME to be a contributor for outdoor & fishing stories and content...I have to call that a win. For those not in the freelance writing space...it's hard work to build relationships over many years with editors and to grow your niche as an expert. While not all things are opportunities are a good fit it sure feels good to get those kinds of emails.

I have a few stories coming out on fishing in the next few weeks but I am especially proud to share this one about how anglers play a vital role in species conservation that was just published this week. It was a treat to work with so many valuable angling experts on this story.

...they are the boots-on-the-ground, eyes and ears to aid in data collection and they are the most passionate advocates for species’ protection. Just getting on the water to fish, no matter where it is in the world, has a greater impact beyond the joy of just catching a personal best.

It's always cool hitting new journalistic milestones and I've just submitted the most intensive travel story that I've ever written. The more than 3000 word article submitted with over 90 photographs and 4 pages of captions was the wonderful result of a nearly four-month process of research, interviews, writing, photographing, editing and a 6000 mile journey to cover it in one of the most pristine and remote regions of the world. This was no ordinary travel article...but one that allowed me to get deep into my journalistic core. This photo was taken while on-location trying to work offline and remotely with handwritten notes and a bluetooth keyboard for my phone.
