All kinds of fun things to discover in Knox County when you drive down 34!

U.S. Route 34 is an east-west United States highway that spans approximately 1,122 miles, connecting north-central Colorado to the western suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. The western terminus is located at Granby, Colorado, where it intersects with U.S. Route 40. From there, it travels through Rocky Mountain National Park, including the scenic Trail Ridge Road, which is one of the highest continuous paved roads in the country.

As the route continues eastward, it passes through various towns and cities in Colorado before entering Nebraska. In Nebraska, it serves as a major connector, running through cities such as McCook, Hastings, and Lincoln. It crosses the Missouri River into Iowa near Plattsmouth and continues through several Iowa communities, including Glenwood, Creston, and Ottumwa.

Entering Illinois, U.S. Route 34 travels through the western and northern regions of the state. It serves as a vital corridor for suburban and rural areas, passing through Galesburg, Princeton, and Aurora. The route eventually ends in Berwyn, a western suburb of Chicago, at an intersection with Illinois Route 43.

Throughout its length, U.S. Route 34 provides access to numerous natural, cultural, and urban landmarks, making it a significant transportation route in the Midwest and beyond.

Spotlight: Walnut Creek Mercantile 🏷
This cozy little store, located in Altona, is a special one that many probably pass by when driving on route 34. Walnut Creek Mercantile features primitive antiques, Black label candles, and seasonal handmade items. The building itself was established in the 1850s and was restored in 2012/2013 by Barb Creglow and her husband, Randy. Those who have shopped there have always felt at-home and welcomed by Barb; loving her creativity and the quality of her handmade items. Next time you’re cruising down highway 34, stop in the shop and browse!

Spotlight: Grandview Restaurant 🥪
In 1952, current owner Dawn Barlow’s great grandmother and great aunt opened Grandview Restaurant in Galesburg. Known for its homestyle meals, Grandview has an inviting and homey atmosphere that makes it the perfect spot for a casual breakfast or lunch. Despite the changing of times, this cozy family restaurant has maintained its family-diner feel to bring you an authentic dining experience from the ‘50s.
