Great Galveston history!

Great Galveston history!

One of the founders of the City of Galveston, Texas - Government, Michel B. Menard arrived in Texas in 1829. He was born near Montreal in 1805 and arrived in Nacogdoches in the 1830s and began speculating in Texas land. Because land was only granted to Mexican-born Texans at that time, many of Menard’s land deals were made by Juan Seguin, a Mexican citizen who eventually fought under Sam Houston at the Battle of San Jacinto. Seguin purchased 4,600 acres at the eastern end of Galveston Island on behalf of Menard in December 1836. With this claim, Menard formed the Galveston City Company with Samuel May Williams and other prominent Texas businessmen in 1838. Galveston was incorporated a year later.

The Michel B. Menard House was built in 1838 and the oldest on the island, is in the Greek revival style. The furniture and furnishings, with few exceptions, all date from the first half of the 19th century (1800-1850s). Michel Menard died in 1856 and his descendants occupied the house until 1879. In 1880, the house was bought by Edwin N. Ketchum, the police chief during the 1900 Storm. The Ketchum family owned the home until the 1970s. During the early 1990s, the house was in such disrepair, it was threatened with demolition by the City of Galveston.

Currently, Galveston Historical Foundation owns the house and hosts numerous activities open to the public including the Menardi Gras party. The home is also available for private rentals.

From the nautical wheel embellishments to the intricate and colorful roof, the widow’s walk and the freestanding spiral staircase, the 1888 McKinney-McDonald House on Winnie has long been a symbol of Galveston resilience and left a lasting impression on island admirers and passersby. Since being built for Liberty S. McKinney (cool name right?), a sea merchant and grocer, the home has had a tumultuous ride, surviving many storms, fires and neglect. Since Liberty and the family pulled anchor after the Great Storm of 1900, 926 Winnie has been home to multiple Galveston families.

Come Share the Island Experience!

We’ve been enjoying Galveston since 1987 and renting our vacation properties to Island visitors since 2001. In all that time, we’ve amassed a lot of information about the Island. In 2018, we decided to create the Galveston Experience Company to share all our knowledge about the Island, but that’s just the beginning.

The Galveston Experience Platform will allow ANYONE who has a service, business or experience they’d like to share with the over 6 million annual visitors to Galveston Island.

The first step in our launch is our 24/7 commercial free radio station, www.RadioGalveston.com, home to our Galveston Experience and Galveston Ghost Podcasts, and a spot to hear about events and happenings in Galveston.

We have SO MANY great things planned for 2019 so we hope you’ll LIKE the page and stay tuned for the BEST of Galveston curated and delivered for you by your new friends on the Island - the Galveston Experience Company.
