We’ve been getting lots of questions from curious audience members about how Mergatroyd, the lovable robotic mouse from “Interstellar Cinderella,” was made. 🤖

In short, with lots of creativity and some recycled and upcycled parts: Mergatroyd consists of a trash can, grill wheels, a camping lantern, dryer parts, dog food bowls from the dollar store, and a mixing bowl. See if you can identify each part! 🗑️

And now we have a question: If you were tasked with designing a robot with materials from around the house, what items would you use? 🔧

Come see Mergatroyd in “Interstellar Cinderella,” on stage through March 21: https://bit.ly/interstellarlicm

Meet Jeanmarie Walsh Mansfield, Director of Special Projects & Community Initiatives, LICM

“Sometimes life has a way of bringing you full circle. Art and education have always been central to who I am. A winding path led me here, but it's exactly where I was meant to be. After art school, I worked at a documentary photo agency in NYC. I was there during 9/11, and that experience led me back to school for education: I knew I wanted to work in a children's museum.

"I started at LICM working outreach and quickly moved to community access grants, and everything I've done since has been community access oriented. Now, I work to make sure the Museum is accessible to everyone. I partner with community organizations across LI to help their families discover and access the Museum. No two days are the same: I might be working with artists, assisting writing grants, teaching art classes, or collaborating on special projects. My own exhibit, in 2009, documented migrant farm workers in Florida. I wanted to show the faces behind our food – to help people think about whose hands were the last to touch that orange before it reached them.

“One of my most memorable moments here happened in Our Backyard, my favorite permanent exhibit. I was with a child who had never seen food growing before. The look on his face when he bit into a tomato straight from our garden – it was mind-blowing for him. It was also a learning experience for me. It reminded me not to take for granted the 'firsts' that happen here. There are so many more than you might realize.

"My children, 9 and 11, have grown up here. They were always excited that 'Mommy worked in a really cool place,' and they still love coming to visit. Their handprints are part of our mural now – they're literally part of the Museum forever. Watching them discover and learn here is incredibly rewarding. Especially now, it's important to help children understand that we're a community, and we need to take care of each other.

"The people here are what make this place special. Everyone who works here shares the same goal: to help kids and their families learn and grow. I'm a lifer. This is my home.”

LICM President Erika Floreska traveled to Washington D.C. earlier this week for Museums Advocacy Day, organized by American Alliance of Museums. Along with representatives from museums across New York State, Erika met with our elected officials and staff to advocate for critical funding for museums, and to discuss the many ways that museums enhance communities and strengthen local economies.

Many thanks to Senator Chuck Schumer, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Rep. Laura Gillen, Rep. Tom Suozzi, Rep. Andrew Garbarino, Gregory Meeks, and their dedicated teams for working with us to ensure a bright future for LICM and all museums.

Do you want to help advocate for museums? Visit https://www.congressweb.com/aam/ to contact your elected officials about issues impacting cultural institutions.

Ian Love’s "Echoes of the Forest" exhibit is a feast for the senses! While tasting is discouraged (😆), there are so many things to touch, smell, see, and hear up in the Artists’ Corner. Explore the texture of different tree barks; breathe in the scent of pine, red oak, black walnut, red cedar, and sassafras; play a memory game with images of the different trees; listen to the birdsong of the forest; and build your own miniature sculpture as you examine Ian Love’s large-scale pieces. Visit https://bit.ly/eoflicm to learn more about this exhibit.

February break is in full swing, and we are having so much fun welcoming both new and familiar faces to the Museum. Here are some tips to help navigate a busy week at LICM:

1. Skip the line at the box office and reserve your admission or theater tickets in advance online. 🎟️

2. When visiting, please park in the East or West lots. The unpaved space behind LICM is not a designated parking area. 🚗

3. Our stroller parking areas fill up quickly. If at all possible, we recommend leaving your stroller in the car. 🅿️

4. A cafeteria with vended services is available on the first floor of the Museum. Visitors are also welcome to bring their own food for consumption in our cafeteria. 🍎

Check out www.licm.org/visit for more information.
