Thanks for all the birthday wishes. They are truly appreciated. Now I start the long hill down the backside of the seventies.

Went out fishing today with Ed on the pontoon boat. A fair number of fish around the Rockpile and others scattered out to 75'. I didn't see as many cisco schools as in the past. Trolled and the fish had lockjaw with the exception of a 5 lb laker which went back in. Every year is different. That is what makes Bear Lake so challenging. After fifty years of looking at sonar screens I am still at a loss.

There was a recent post with drone photos showing wat appeared to be black material running into Bear Lake at the fish ladders were St. Charles Creek enters the lake. I went up this morning and the water was stained. This is typical of return irrigation flows and water the comes contact with decaying plants. There is no sediment in the water. Once it enters the lake it will dissipate. While walking down the stream, I saw more leapord frogs than I have seen in years🙂

I was hired to captain a pontoon boat for a wedding yesterday. The first load was 10 young, wild kids with 3 adults. Stiff wind out of the SW but they had to jump in the Lake. A challenge keeping track and picking up all of them. Cold and wet they had enough as we headed to shore. Other trips were normal.

Did a tour on the lake this morning . Beautiful weather and no surf boats. Apparently the water has quit coming into the lake so this is the high point this season. The irrigators and evaporation will now use the water. Good spring this year.

Taking my first tour out on the lake ths morning. The weather has not been condusive for being out on the water. I keep getting requests for guided fishing trips but I am not doing that anymore due to old eyes and slow fishing. Doing tours by reservation. Check out ciscocharters.com. Hopefully we will have a nice June.

Down at the marina today doing some unoffficial creel census. Checked a few boats. Most had caught cutthroat, 1 lb mack
and whitefish but the fishing is slowing down. No cisco snagged but they could see them on the sonar. Any day now.

I was down to the marina this afternoon conducting my unofficial creel census. I continue to do it because I can't quit after 50 years. Talked two boats coming off the lake and both had a good time catching nice cutthroat. The fish were fat and colorful which is change from last year. I suspect this is a result of all the productive water filling the lake this spring resulted in more fish food.

It looks like the Bonneville whitefish have started to spawn. Great sporting fish and great filets. Fish rocky areas from shore or boats with jigs or small lures.

I attnded the public open house on the marina expansion project last night. Construction is postponed until fall of 2024. They have ambitious plans but I am concerned with how they are planning to accomplish it. After seeing the problems that occured during the enlargemnt of the original marina, I am not sure they are aware of what Bear Lake is capable of. I am no engineer so I hope they are succesful. It would provide more habitat for fish

Summer is passing. I read about how hot it is but weather has been typical at Bear Lake. Maybe all the cold we experienced this winter just made things seem hotter when it warmed up. Only one or two days in the lower 90's. The lake temperature is noirmal.

I took some great people out on my first Lake Tour this year. The lake was peaceful and I enjoyed sharing my knowledge of the lake with them. They had tons of questions which I loved answering. No pressure of trying to catch fish which I enjoyed in the past but no longer do. I talk about the formation of the lake, its unique water chemistry, how the water gets into and out of the lake and its endemic fish. After discussing historical aspect of the lake, I end with my encounters with the Bear Lake Monster. Go to Ciscocharters.com for more information.

Apparently I wasn't clear on my future Cisco Charters ventures. I will continue to book Eco Tours on the lake. They just require a couple hours and I meet all types of interesting people. I enjoy sharing my knowledge of the Bear Lake ecosystem with my passengers. I will focus on making them informative and interesting. I talk about the lake formation, its chemistry, how water gets in the lake, its enemic fish, all types of side stories and wind up with the legend of the Bear Lake Monster. The kids may even be able to drive the pontoon boat. It is just too much work to guide fishermen. Check out my website a ciscocharters.com. for more information.

Sadly, I have made the decision to quit being a fishing guide at Cisco Charters. Unfortunately I keep getting older and my eyesight and energy are diminishing. Trying to run the pontoon boat, rigging up lures, and giving the clients a quality experience for their money is more than I can handle. Think it is time to get out of the fishing guide business. I will miss all of the fishermen and the excitement of catching a fish. I have had a good run so its time to give it up. Thanks to all. I will comtimue to do lake tours.

I saw a notice from Connelly Balwin, PacifiCorp today. It was an update of the lake elevation predictions. Considering how much snow there is in the upper Bear River, he is predicting that the Lake will fill to 5918.5'or more. Presently it is 5911.5. The runoff has not started yet since the river is still frozen. When it starts to run , past experience tells me the ice will start to float and then break up scattering iceburgs on the points. Then a weird thing may happen. The lake will turn green for while its all of the enriched runoff water lays on top of the cold blue lake water. That will remain until the stratified water mixes retuns to its classic blue.

The snow and ice at Bear Lake is never ending but I have to admit I have eeen at Lake Havasu for the last three weeks. Fishingn from shore has been poor for Ed ad I. A few small stripers is all.

Bear Lake will be a different story. There is 2 feet of clear ice under who knows how much snow. That will not melt until the Bear River system starts to flow. I suspect we will see the lastest ice off in memory this spring, so don't get in a hurry to fish the lake.

It has been a long winter at the Lake. It froze near the end of January and just keeps getting thicker. Forcasts into March are dismal so who know when it will open up. Tons of snow so when the runoff starts (??) it will melt from the bottom up. Fishing has been fair this winter so I have hopes for more success than last summer.
