Cades Cove is the most frequented area in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, drawing millions of annual visitors. Offering vistas of rolling mountains and lush fields, this idyllic valley looks like a picture book come to life.
An 11-mile, one-way loop road passes through Cades Cove, stopping at all of its major landmarks. A visit to the valley can take anywhere from two to four (or more) hours, depending on the time of year and how long you spend walking around at the various sites. Cades Cove is especially crowded in the summer and fall.
Along the loop road, visitors will see a collection of well-maintained historic buildings from the 1800s. Stops on the route include numerous log cabins, a working gristmill, three churches, and a cantilever barn. Cades Cove also features a wonderful Visitor Center where you can pick up some fantastic souvenirs to take back home.
We would be remiss if we didn’t mention that Cades Cove is a favorite destination for wildlife viewing. With its wide open spaces, the valley is perfect for spotting white-tailed deer, wild turkey, coyotes, and black bear. It is not uncommon for traffic to come to a halt when someone spies a bear from their car. Be sure to bring binoculars or a camera so you can observe the critters from a safe distance (at least 150 feet away).

FUN FACT: Mount LeConte is the third tallest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains. Many people enjoy hiking to the summit and staying in LeConte Lodge, a small gathering of cabins you can rent. If you stay more than a few days, you will probably eat the food the lodge prepares. But there aren’t roads to get to the top, so how do they get their supplies? Llamas!
There are several ways you can reach the top of the mountain, but they are only on hiking trails. There aren’t any roads to get to the lodge, so the llamas are used to bring supplies up and waste down. Horses were used to bring supplies for a long time, but they had a hard time on the rocky, steep trail. LeConte Lodge switched to llamas in 1986 and have been using them ever since.
Llamas have been used as pack animals for about 5,000 years. They can carry up to 30 percent of their body weight. These animals have leathery pads on their feet that grip onto surfaces, making it easy for them to travel up rocky terrain.
Before they hike up the mountain, the llamas eat alfalfa cubes to get ready for their journey. Packs are filled with fresh linens and food. Trillium Gap Trail is used because it is considered the easiest trail to get to the summit. The llamas make this trek three times a week, usually on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. They should be at the trail around 6 to 6:30 am and start traveling around 7:30 am. They must travel 6.7 miles one way, and it takes them about 4 hours. Llamas are led by a llama wrangler. The animals are connected with rope at the bridles. They stop at creeks to let them drink and take a break.
Once the llamas reach the summit, the crew from LeConte Lodge comes out and helps unpack their bags. Then, they get lunch and pancakes as a snack. Then, the packs are filled with dirty linens and garbage to be taken back down.

Located just minutes away from the downtown Parkway, this lovely road is by far the most convenient sightseeing trip for Cabin Peeps staying at Swingin’ On A Star. At only 5.5 miles, the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is perfect for a quick afternoon outing. Running beside a rushing stream, this one-way loop road offers mountain views, historic buildings, fantastic foliage in the fall, and a wet weather waterfall (a.k.a. the Place of a Thousand Drips). Right before you enter the trail, you can explore the Noah “Bud” Ogle homestead, which features a log cabin, tub mill, and old flume plumbing system. You will also find the trailheads for a number of popular hikes, including Rainbow Falls and Grotto Falls. Just a note that it does close during the Winter.

Our family favorite is The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail…close to the cabin and it is a one-way, scenic loop that is 6 miles long. The quick trip will provide plenty of views of mountains, streams, mills, and other historic buildings. also provides access to the Trillium Gap Trail. Hike the Trillium Gap Trail to reach Grotto Falls, the only place in the Smoky Mountains where you can stand behind the falls as the water cascades to the pool. If hiking to a waterfall is not your thing, the Place of a Thousand Drips can be reached by car. It’s one of two waterfalls in the park accessible by car—find it at stop 15, near the end of the beautiful and captivating Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail.
