Vantage Point. I started photographing wildlife from the tops of mountains and hills with a telephoto lens back in 2017.

At the same time that these kinds of images are physically captured quite far away from the subject, it somehow feels closer. More intimate. Totally uninterrupted moments. From afar, like, really afar, I can observe without intruding. The perspective also brings in the environment, landscape, and their habitat into the frame. Context.

From atop a vantage point I’ve had the opportunity to quietly observe, and notice more than I would from up close. For example, seeing how Giraffe constantly move upwind when feeding on trees. Their favorite food, the Acasia tree has adapted to release tannins when they are being threatened. It makes the leaves taste bitter and they become harder to digest. The trees also release a chemical signal into the air, which alerts other trees in the area of the threat (the hungry Giraffe)… so to combat this, the Giraffe have worked out to walk into the wind, because messages between trees can only be carried down wind. Clever Giraffe…
