Just over seven miles separate the southern end of Gettysburg and the Maryland border. For those seeking freedom from enslavement prior to the Civil War, seven miles meant the difference between potential forceful return to bo***ge and potential safety.

Several Gettysburg residents served as "conductors" on the Underground Railroad, providing a safe haven just over the border. James McCallister Jr used his mill to house freedom seekers and helped found the Adams County Anti-Slavery Society. Basil Biggs, a free Black man who worked as a tenant farmer on the Crawford Farm, also reportedly helped those crossing the border. When the war came to their doorsteps, Biggs and his family (seen in the photo) fled rather than risk capture and enslavement. Returning to a home and farm destroyed by battle, Biggs led the difficult work of disinterring and reburial of more than 3,000 Union dead into the new National Cemetery.

“The Sumter (Georgia) Artillery”

The monument to Lane’s Artillery Battalion is southwest of Gettysburg on West Confederate Avenue near the North Carolina Monument. The battalion was known as the Sumter Artillery as many men were recruited from Sumter County, Georgia. The battalion was commanded at the Battle of Gettysburg by the battalion’s executive officer, Major John Lane, while its commander, Lieutenant Colonel Alan S. Cutts, was on a leave of absence.

Remembering Antietam September 17, 1862, on this day. Our neighboring battlefield suffered the highest casualty rate (nearly 23,000) on this day 162 years ago. Antietam was America's bloodiest day on our own soil, which would eventually lead to Gettysburg nine months later (over 51,000 casualties), the bloodiest battle in American history.
