The Eisenhower National Historic Site in Gettysburg, PA, is hosting their second Easter Egg Roll event! From 11 AM to 2 PM on Saturday, April 19th there will be games, activities, and most importantly, an egg roll.

The tradition of the White House Easter Egg Roll started under President Rutherford B. Hayes and has continued off and on ever since. World Wars, the Great Depression and global food shortages after World War II caused several presidents to forgo the event. But, in 1953, the Eisenhowers moved into the White House and Mamie Eisenhower reignited the tradition.

Mary Virginia "Jennie" Wade was 20 years old on July 3, 1863, when she was killed during the Battle of Gettysburg.

Jennie was making bread in her sister's home for the Union soldiers when a bullet pierced through two doors and killed her. She was the only civilian killed during the battle.

She is buried in Gettysburg at Evergreen Cemetery, which is marked by an American flag pole. She is one of few women in the country to have a perpetual flag flying at her grave.

Visit The Jennie Wade House to learn more about her story.
