Meet Dorene!

She is a spunky 73-year-old who lives in Prescott and has been teaching Arthritic Aquatic classes for 5 years at the YMCA. She was born in Boise, Idaho, has a twin sister and was a 4H teacher. She has 6 daughters, 14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren! She loves animals, is very crafty and skilled in crocheting and sewing.

While visiting back home in Idaho for a family reunion Dorene suffered a massive stroke that significantly affected her speech and the right side of her body. She was hospitalized in Idaho for 7 days, then flew to Arizona and was admitted to an Acute Rehabilitation facility and spent 2 weeks there. When Dorene arrived at Wellsprings on June 28, she was unable to move her right arm and had minimal movement in her right leg. She required extensive assistance to perform self-care tasks: dressing, bathing and toileting. She also required extensive assistance with her mobility: getting up and down to the side of the bed, moving from bed to wheelchair, getting on and off the toilet, in and out of the shower. Dorene was unable to walk at all. She had moderate voice and speech issues and had an altered diet to ensure she was able to safely swallow food. Dorene’s therapy goals were to return home: 1) with improved speech so others could easily understand her, 2) with the ability to perform toileting tasks without assistance, and 3) being able to walk and move from bed to wheelchair with less help.

Physical, Occupational and Speech therapy started immediately and during her fourth Physical Therapy session Dorene walked for the first time since having the stroke – she walked 8 feet! By the end of her first week at Wellsprings she required less help with toileting and dressing and her voice was already noticeably stronger. Fast forward to today, 6 weeks later - Dorene has amazed us all, she is highly motivated and determined. She can now walk 80 feet and get up to the side of the bed and back into bed without assistance. Dorene can complete toileting, upper body dressing and bathing without physical assistance. She is crushing her goals and we cannot wait to see what more she accomplishes before her discharge date.

Dorene is excited to return to her own home at the end of the month and is looking forward to taking care of Tucker (her dog) and Mark (her bird).

And the TEAM at Wellsprings of Gilbert is going to miss the smiles she caused us each and everyday!!! She is LOVED!

the Wellsprings difference

Our core belief is INCLUSION - to break down the barriers between patient and provider, and place the patient at the center of their healing journey.

Wellsprings deliberately designed our facility to eliminate physical barriers - patients aren’t some room number down some hall, but in their own private suite off the main living area. Our integrated living spaces combine dining, living, and visiting areas, directly accessible from every room. This encourages peer to peer interaction, where patients can find strength in sharing their journey (or just a cup of coffee) with one another.

Our 5,000 square foot rehabilitation gym includes next generation equipment, like our Alter G anti-gravity treadmill, designed by NASA. Along with our state of the art aquatic pool, our program promotes much quicker recovery and healing than a standard program. We have an on-site Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physician, who works closely with our guests, family and interdisciplinary team to create an individualized plan of care. At Wellsprings our main focus is our guests, helping them get back to an autonomous, healthy life and restoring normal functionality through physical, occupational, and speech therapies, along with around the clock nursing care. Our warm and inviting rehabilitation facility is composed of 32 private suites, each including a walk in shower, personal thermostat, direct TV, wireless internet, and an at home feel to help ease the recovery process. Wellspring’s goal is to provide quality care across disciplines to transition guests successfully home.
